Determining Weight during Ultrasound

My daughter is having an ultrasound tomorrow because she was measuring small - - she is 36 weeks.  Should the ultrasound tech be able to give us the weight of the baby?  How accurate is that information?

You are absolutely right..... I CAN relax now, and stop having strange nightmares about things going wrong - - - - Geez, you would think "I" was the one pregnant, LOL.

I'm glad your appointment went well too...I still think this little girl is going to be smaller than expected, but maybe I'll be surprised.

That is great news!!!  I'm glad everything is going like it is supposed to!! I had my u/s on Tuesday instead of Thursday and everything looks good with my little girl too.  They estimated her to be about 4lbs.

Now we can relax a little!!!

Thank God for the epidural or atleast the man that invented it!  I didn't feel a thing. Infact my kids and husband were more freaked out about it than I was. I was just hungry and ready for that baby to come out so I can eat....lol.  My Dr said he probably would have induced sooner if he had known. Luckily, this time around I get growth sonos about once a month. I'll have another one tomorrow at 34w4d. Maybe he will change my induction date if she is still measuring big....I hope!

jesslee83, not rude at all.......I'm actually proud of myself that I didn't kill ne one.....Had it not been for that epidural that I ALMOST opted out of.

Well, I was able to go to the ultrasound with my daughter (hubby had to work) and they estimated the weight of the baby at 6 lbs, with 4 weeks to go.  Originally, I was going to be very surprised if this little girl was more than 7 pounds at delivery, and she may still be, but she could also be as much as 8 lbs, if she gains 1/2 pound per week.

I am so relieved that everything looked ok, especially since she was measuring so small.  The doc thinks that since my daughter has a small build, she is just carrying differently.

Thank you everyone for your input.....

I have never had an u/s to determine weight but I have heard of stories where they induced woman because they were certain they were having huge babies....turns out that the babies were only 7-8 bls. With my last baby I asked my midwife if she could give me a guess at the baby's weight and she felt around my stomach for a minute and took a guess at 7.5 lbs. I was freaked cause I still had 2 weeks to go, or so I thought. I ened up going into labor that night and he weighed 7 lbs 8.5 oz!! That pretty darn accurate, lol!
Has your daughter doctor guessed at the weight??

I have heard of the sonographer being off more than not. I wouldn't trust the weight, but go by the measurments they take (gestational age). They were wrong about my son and he was 9lbs 13oz and got stuck during delivery. I had two nurses jump up on my stomach to help him out. His head was already out so there was no going back.

they aren't 100% accurate but pretty close most of the time...

with my first they were off on her weight. They told me she wieghed 8lbs+ but I had her 8 days later and she weighed 7.7 so they give you estimated guess on how much the baby will weigh. you could ask how is baby growing, how her "body" looks (lungs, head, heart ect....) I am sure some of the other women may be alble to help a lil more.
Good Luck!

When they determine the weight it is a "estimate" they told my sister that my niece was a 10lb baby and she weighed only 7.5 lbd

They should tell you how much the baby is after they do all of the measurements, I do belive that they HAVE too do all the measurements everytime you have a u/s......When I had my u/s at 24weeks the u/s tech told me that the baby was about 1pound 11oz....

The ultrasound technician was pretty grouchy last time (at the 20 week), so I am wondering if the doctor is specifically asking for an ultrasound to determine "gestational age" (which already know is completely accurate) are they required to find out the weight too?  Is that part of the "gestational age" scan?  I can just see this ultrasound person doing as little as possible.  Since my son-in-law can't go this time, I get to go with my daughter, so I will be her voice for questions (my daughter is a bit shy asking).  I want to be sure I am asking the right questions, so we can get a weight on that little baby, LOL.

Thanks.

They will do all different kinds of measures & they put them into there computer and it gave you  the best idea of how much the baby weight is......
