Distended Cervix - PLEASE HELP!

I am very newly pregnant and had my first OB appointment today.  He did a pap smear and told me my cervix is distended.  He said that could mean low implantation...therefore not a viable pregnancy.  :(  He told me not to worry because his opinion is "subjective since he's never examined me before" and maybe my cervix is like this all the time.  I wasn't told anything was wrong with my cervix when I was pregnant with my daughter.  Is this pregnancy doomed?  I have an ultrasound scheduled for April 8th.  Is there any hope?

The waiting game is definitely the worst part.  Hopefully your blood work will come back normal and an ultrasound in the next few weeks will ease your mind.

My "distended cervix" turned out to be a dermoid cyst in my lower pelvic area.  It was pushing down on my cervix and that is what the doctor felt during my first pap.  It did not cause me any complications during my entire pregnancy and I now have a healthy 5 week old little girl!  I hope that you get good news as well.  Good luck!

Well when I found out I was pregnant I was about 6 weeks along. Well I couldn't get into a doctor until 2 weeks later. which we thought would put me at 8 Weeks. I had started to motice some bleeding and spotting. It went from dark brown to really red and now its back to dark brown and almost has stopped. I went to the doctor and the first set of blood that he took my HCG level was 1227, I waited 2 days and got more blood taken and my HCG level did not double like it was suppose to, it had went up but not as much as what the doctor would have liked to see. So he did an ultrasound and according to that I was about 6 weeks pregnant and the baby was not where it was suppose to be. The baby was closer to my cervix. When they tried to find a heartbeat nothing was showing up. I didn't know if i may only be 6 weeks along or if the baby was trying to release itself causing me to have a misscarrage. I have not had any pains at all or morning sickness or anything. The only symptom was the bleeding, which like i said has almost stopped now. I got more blood taken yesterday morning and I will find out the results on monday. Should I be concerned?

I had my bloodwork done today.  (8 viles...and I didn't pass out!  Yay!)  The hospital said they'll fax it over to his office tonight.  My doctor told me to call him tomorrow to schedule the ultrasound this week...so hopefully they can get me in tomorrow or Friday!  He wanted to have the blood work on hand to do a comparison with the ultrasound.  I'll keep you posted!

Oh Amy.  I am sorry you are having to go through all this worry. IMO the dr. is retracting what he said originally by saying now that it could be normal, not to worry.  I think he knows he exaggerated a bit and is trying to lighten up now.

I bet your fine, dear.

Oh and yes they should be able to see the sac(s) by 5 weeks.  Good Luck,  You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Update - I had some light brown spotting this morning, which I know is normal from the pap.  I decided to call the doctor and tell him I had some bleeding (I know...shame on me for exaggerating!)  He asked if I had my bloodwork done yet, I said no.  He said to get my blood work done today so he would have a comparison to go by when he does my ultrasound...which he wants to do THIS week.  Yay!  I am supposed to call him tomorrow after the blood work is done.

I mentioned the distended cervix again when I called (to remind him who I was)  He sort of shrugged if off this time saying it could be completely normal, it was nothing to worry about, it was only his subjective opinion and we'd know for sure after the ultrasound...I'm glad I got it pushed up.  Of COURSE I'm worried!

I am not expecting to see a baby at the ultrasound...I just want some reassurance that it implanted in the correct place.  All of the things I've read on the internet about cervical pregnancies (what causes a distended cervix) are AWFUL.  :(

I found more information...it all leads to cervical pregnancy...it's like an ectopic but it attaches to the cervix.  It is rare and life threatening...lovely.  The bleeding can be so profuse that it would require a hysterectomy to stop the bleeding.  Holy moly...the internet sure is good for freaking people out!  No wonder the doctor was so stern about me calling labor and delivery if I start bleeding.  :(

Thanks ladies.  I guess I am going to just hope I don't start bleeding before the ultrasound.  :(  It's going to seem like a long 2 weeks!  I think I might see if I can get the appointment moved to 4/6 instead of 4/8.  I'm on spring break that week anyway...and Monday is two days closer than Wednesday!  *sigh*  HOW on earth do women not think about 'doomsday' things like this when they get potentially bad news?

You'd at least be able to see if the sac is near the cervix.

I think that if this is how you feel (I didn't realize you were this early) then definitely wait the 2 weeks. Nothing should happen in this time. And if you do have placenta previa, it may mean c-section or it may move as your belly grows. The waiting game stinks but we're here with you!

But what can you even see on an ultrasound at 4-5 weeks?  Would that even tell us anything?  I don't want to be one of those many women who walk away upset because they couldn't "see" anything because it was too early??

I'd still push for the early ultrasound..if not, you could fib and try to get one...is that evil?  Say you were having cramps or something?  It is evil.  Although, I'd have a hard time waiting if I were in your shoes, in all honesty.

I think they want to 'kill two birds with one stone' by having my ultrasound in two weeks...being able to date the pregnancy, see the developing baby, determing how many fetuses there are, AND making sure everything is OK with my cervix.  I don't know if I can wait that long though.  UGH!  I googled low implantation and it sounded like that mostly lead to placenta previa...which CAN still be a viable pregnancy.  Dang it, this *****!!!

GREAT idea Joy!  I agree, call back and ask if they can move it up any earlier than the 8th!

I also don't know what distended cervix means. A sonogram is the best idea- maybe they could move it up for you for this Friday or upcoming Monday?!

*HUGS*

Oh Amy!  I hope everything is alright!!!  I had no idea what a distended cervix was, so I googled it and didn't get much!  The info I did read seemed to all be coming from a transvaginal ultrasound rather than an internal exam.  HOPEFULLY, your cervix is like this all the time and the ultrasound will confirm everything is fine!

Maybe your cervix changed AFTER you had your daughter?  Best wishes!
