Everyone and every baby is different but I had a friend that was not able to see the fetus that early.  There was a sac but no baby.  The doctors thought she might have a blighted ovum.  I didn't know what that meant.  I searched it and it just kept directing me to miscarriage and how to deal with miscarriage websites.  I felt so bad for her.  I thought she was going to lose the baby for sure.  Her HCG levels were pretty low also.  It didn't look good.  But she just gave birth to a healthy baby girl on 9-17-07.  She had no problems whatsoever with her pregnancy.  Something to always remember also is that ovulation dates could be off.  You could have ovulated later in your cycle than you normally would.  A day or two in early pregnancy can make a HUGE difference.  So much happens everyday in early pregnancy.  It's really incredible.  I have had 5 children and with everyone, I read my week by week book about what the baby is doing.

Didn't he say that your gestation pouch "looked" 8 weeks?

Yes Im going back in 10 days, he said he really didnt know if it was just too early to see anything or if I could possibly miscarry, i had my last period on sept 19th which I'm positive about, which would put me exactly at 6 weeks.  I know I'm not a dr. but I personally think hes wrong about the 8 week conclusion, just because I know my dates are not wrong...

Sorry, we must have been posting at the same time.  :)
You will see the fetus first, then the heartbeat.  So the u/s measured you to be around 8 wks?  What did the doctor say about it?  Will they be doing another u/s soon?

At 6 weeks I think it is still possible not to see a fetus.  Has anyone else experienced this?

but is it between 6-8 weeks that you can see the fetus?  According to my dates (which are very accurate) I should be right exactly at the 6 week mark, I went yesterday for the ultra sound and they saw the gestational sac but no fetus!  The Dr. said the size of the sac looked like it could be 8 weeks but there was no fetus, according to dates 6 weeks, what do you think?

My ultrasound at 5wk5days did not show a fetus, but my ultrasound the following week at 6wk5day showed a tiny fetus with a heartbeat.  I think it's usually between 6-8 weeks that you can see a heartbeat.
