How many are getting the flu shot?

I am just curious to see how many pregnant women on here are getting the flu shot or deciding against it? Are there reasons why (kids, past experiences, religion, anti/pro-vaccine, etc.) you choose to get it or not?

Also, if you have children 6 months and older are you having them get the flu shot?

This is not meant to be a debate between people's opinions. What people choose to do or not to do with their bodies is their right.

Tiffany I am so sorry to hear this :(

I will not be getting the flu shot, everyone on my mothers side of the family has a rare but severe reaction to the flu vaccine and I do as well. So I rather risk getting the flu. My husband will get the flu vaccine and when my child is a bit older they can try and get the vaccine and we will see if they have a reaction to it

It's up to you, but if I could go back about 2 weeks ago, I would NEVER have gotten it!!

I just delivered my baby boy "CJ" on Thursday (Nov 11), after finding no fetal heartbeat on Nov 4th at my routine appt. I was 17.5 weeks. They did an emergency ultrasound at the hospital that same day and found that he was sizing 16 weeks, around the time I got the shot. I did not have any reaction to the shot, other than muscle achiness in my arm.

It could be a coincidence. It could be a fluke accident. I don't know. I'm waiting for the Pathology report, hopefully at my 2 week follow-up appt on the 23rd of this month. I will be bringing up my flu-shot concerns to my doctor!

My best to you!

~Tiffany~

I too had never gotten the flu shot but the Dr didn't seem like he would shut up until I agreed to the darn thing so at 19 weeks I got one and now at 20 weeks I have had no bad side effects. I will admit after 2 cycles of IVF I really didn't want to see another needle and it was wierd having someone else jab me...but I sucked it up ^_^

I have a needle phobia...have always been recommended to get a flu vaccine because I have asthma AND I am a teacher and get exposed to hundreds of people daily YET I never got one in 27 years UNTIL this year...my ob gave me tons of info that pregnant woman should get it and that it was the right choice etc. etc.   So, I figured I'd get it...I trusted that he knew what he was doing =)

I decided against getting a flu shot despite my doc suggesting I get one. Shots freak me out, especially while pregnant, and I just didn't think it was worth it. But thats a personal choice. Just do your research, and whatever you decide will be the right choice.

I am 23 weeks pregnant. I am getting the flu shot. My work offers it free of charge so I asked my OB if it is something that I should get. She said that any woman pregnant during the months of October-May should definetely get the flu shot! She said they used to suggest anyone in the 2nd or 3rd trimester get it, but they now have everyone get it no matter what trimester you are in.
So, I am going to get it, and the doctor said it is definetely something I should get!

Hey. I am 33 wks & went to my reg. OB appt. last week @ 32 wks and they asked me if I wanted a flu shot. I said, Well, I might as well get one while I'm here. So, I did and as far as I know...they don't use the live virus anymore which is why people use to get a "touch" of the flu. I got mine over a week ago and I have felt fine. I could barely even feel the shot when the nurse stuck it in my arm. LOL My boys are 4 & 22 mths & I plan on taking them both to get a flu shot.

Durham~  I think it's especially good that you get it!  My nephew is always sick and my sister is dumb and brings him around everyone and gets everyone sick....  So being around sick kids, i'd ask for a super flu shot!!!  LOL  :)

Well, yeah definately ask about it!  They never used to offer it to me, until my dad snapped at the doctors when I was under 18 for not giving it to me, LOL...

And then my works gives them to us, but I haven't worked in 2 1/2 years now, lol...

So yeah ask and if you can get it, get it!

:-)

A little flu is better than the worse flu while your pregnant in my opinion.  Only because I had gotten one of the worse of them!  :)  aahaha...  But yeah, totally up to you (the prego person) if you want it or not.

Its funny that this is posted here.  I was just checking my email and one of my weekly updates sent me this.....

Flu Vaccine and Pregnant Women

The news: Influenza, or flu, is a potentially dangerous respiratory infection that poses the greatest risk to infants, pregnant women, and the elderly. New research from Bangladesh examines whether infants under 6 months, who cannot be vaccinated against the flu, would receive any protective benefit if the mother were vaccinated while she was pregnant.

Three hundred and forty pregnant women were enrolled in the study, sponsored by Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Half of the women were given the flu vaccine in the third trimester, and the other half, the control group, did not receive the vaccine.

There was a 63 percent decrease in flu and an almost 30 percent decrease in respiratory illness with fever in the vaccinated women's children under 6 months compared with the infants of the unvaccinated women. In the mothers, the incidence of all respiratory illness with fever was reduced by one-third with vaccination. (The New England Journal of Medicine, September 17, 2008, http://content. nejm.org/cgi/ content/abstract/NEJMoa0708630v1) (take the spaces out)

Comment, by Loraine Stern, M.D.: Last winter the two pregnant doctors in our office came down with every bug under the sun—but they did not get the flu because they were immunized. And the welcome news from this study is that they were protecting their babies as well as themselves from flu and its complications, including pneumonia and life-threatening staph infections.

The new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend annual vaccination essentially for all children 6 months and older and anybody who has contact with them. The vaccine can be given starting in early October and can be given as late as March, even if there is an ongoing flu outbreak.

This is the time of year to protect yourself and your family, even if you're pregnant. Talk to your health care provider if you have any questions about the flu vaccine.

Hope maybe this will help a little!!  Have a wonderful day ladies!!

yes you can get it preggo, all of my doctors paperwork says pregnant women should get it.

even though i am preggo, i don't think i am going to get it because it does not cover you against all the strands of the flu, just a couple and there are 100's of them, so you can stil get the flu.  i am weighing out whether or not it is worth it because when you get the shot, you usually get a little flu anyways.

I know that if your allergic to eggs, or egg shells you cant get it, because those are in it.  It may be the case for you Laura.  I have a lot of allergic to medicines also, so I have to bring in a list of my allergies, and all my medcines for them to see if there will be a reaction to the shot.

But you may not even need it if you rarely get sick!!

This is an interesting topic to me. =)

I am 30 years old and not only never receievd a flu shot, but have never had one recommended to me.. I wonder if it is because I have so many prescription drug allregies.?? I will ask my Dr. next week at my appointment!

Oh also, any pediatrician will tell you any kid under the age of 18 should get the flu shot.  The flu spreads more through kids, and the elderly!  They are taking extra precaution this year to make sure everyone can get it so no one gets so sick that they may die.

So both my kids are getting theirs on Nov 7!

They have one that is specifically made for pregnant woman!  Thats why they always ask you if you could be pregnant!!!  I'll be getting it, when i'm not sick.  Right now everyone in my house has the flu and a horrible cold together.

Your doctor will tell you, you should get it to.  Your immune system isn't as strong as it normally is when your pregnant.  So take my word on it, get it, tell them your pregnant!!!  AND TRUST ME IT HELPS!!!

I had the flu with my son, and it's the one year I didn't have the shot.  It hit me like a sack of rocks, and wiped me out for 6 weeks straight with the flu!  I couldn't move, and couldn't take care of my daughter.  My dad and my husband had to take 6 weeks off to help me.

The flu vaccine is recommended for pregnant women. If you choose to get one, ask for one that DOES NOT contain mercury.
