Membrane Sweep: Did It Work?

I am kind of curious if any of you had a membrane sweep, and whether it worked or not?
I had a Dr's Appointment today and my doctor swept my membranes. We are crossing our fingers that it works! I am 38w2d today.

Hi, I can tell you what happened in with my experience.  I have had it done with 3 of my 4 pregnancies and when I had it done with my first son, it worked.  I had it done on tuesday afternoon, and went into labor wedneday night.  However, with all the rest of them, it didn't work quite like it did with the first one.  I think that yes it does work, but in order for it to work effectively your body definately has to be ready for labor.  Your body knows when it is time, and until them, you won't be able to blow out the baby with dynamite if you tried!  You definately have to have begun dialating, and your cervix definately has to be ripe in order for it to work.  Good luck!

Thanks ladies!
I have another doctor appointment tomorrow and said they would try sweeping again. I will be 39w2d tomorrow. I lost my mucous plug friday morning, so maybe sweeping will produce better results now? I don't know, I just hope something works! Wish me luck! And thank you again ladies! :) I wish you all luck with getting pregnant, or being pregnant!

I want to add that my SIL recently had a baby in April. They tried sweeping her membranes and she ended up being induced. But all three of her kids were inductions. Her body just never wanted to go into labor on its own.

It really can work for some. I'd say it works probably half the time, maybe less, for women.

It is uncomfortable and you do get very crampy. It causes a chemical reaction in your body that should start true labor contractions. They can even accidentally break your water, which would be cause to go to the hospital and labor there.

Yes it worked for me.  And it hurt like heck too!

My dr. was going out of town and I was 36 weeks, so he did the membrane sweep and the baby came the next day.  He thought by 36 weeks I was far enough along, but the baby was still a little premature, and had some breathing problems and had to be in NICU for 9 days.  I wish I had told him not to do the sweep now.

With my 4th child I had one done.  I was 38 weeks and a few days.  They did it on a thursday.  All weekend I got crampy and uncomfortable.  Woke up monday morning, my water was leaking...hospital sent me home.  It continued leaking...went back at 4:30 that afternoon and he was born at 6:54.

I had two of them done and they didn't help at all.  I was mad.  I was even running up and down the staris eating greasy foods to make me have a bowel movement to make things come down alittle more.  I was even running back and fourth in the hall and that didn't work. lol  But everyone is different I ended up being induced at 41wks.  Good luck

It helps for some women but there's a serious risk of developing an infection in your uterus which could complicate the delivery.

Yes and no, my cousin and a friend had it done and by late the same day/night they went into labour, but my sister had to be swept twice and was eventually taken in to be induced, she swears she was in labour for about 3-4 days after first sweep but contractions never fully came on until the day she was induced.  I hope it works for you though it doesn't sound a very nice thing to get!!!

Yes- I had it done in two pregnancies when I was 39 weeks and I had each daughter within 24 hours after having that done.

I've also known other women that just get crampy but nothing else happens on their own or it takes a little longer.

My membranes were swept twice.  At the 38 week visit and at the 40 week visit.  She ended up being 2 weeks late.
