No yolk sac or fetal pole??

I went in for an u/s yesterday and they said everything was perfect and I was about 4 weeks, 4 days along. I went in for bloodwork shortly after and the results came back at 4008. The doctor told me that this in an indication of an abnormal pregnancy because they didnt see a yolk sac or a fetal pole. They just seen the gestational sac, I think it was. She says that if they cant see it by Monday then I will have to schedule a D&C because it is abnormal. I have no pain or bleeding. I dont understand how everything could be normal and then abnormal just because of the beta results. It did go up to 4008 when a week ago exactly it was 276. Any idea what could be the problem?

If your 4 weeks along you're lucky to see anything. HCG levels aren't supposed to be used for determining how old the fetus or what you should see because the levels can be so different from person to person. I had an ultrasound at 5 1/2 weeks with a level of 11000 and they didn't see a heartbeat just the sac and the baby (which is normal for 5 weeks) and told me to expect a miscarriage I called my gyno and he said that it didnt matter and that we would do a repeat ultrasound in a couple days. At 6w1d at the next ultrasound we saw a baby and a heartbeat. Point of the story just wait it out I know its difficult because they have you so worried but as long as your levels are doubling than your good and you'll probably see something more at your next ultrasound. Best of luck to you.

no they didn't find anything the second time either...just the same sac.  I was worried that maybe there were twins and 2 seprate sacs thats why I made them look again.  But they didnt find anything. But I felt much better after they looked the 2nd time.

I went in at 9 weeks and wanted an ultrasound and they didnt do one but said that everything was great and that my uturas was the perfect size for 9 weeks I went back at 11 weeks for ultrasound and all they found was sac no yoke or pole.  They said that they should have seen something at that point...they wanted to do a d&c but i made them wait and do one more ultrasound just to be sure and I also called another ob to make sure I wasn't being mislead.  My doctor did another ultrasound when I asked and the didn't mind.  Like I said I was 11 weeks and I didnt have any bleeding either.  They told me it was okay to wait a little while as long as I was not bleeding.  I would deffinatly wait and have another one done.  At 7 weeks they should deffinatly be able to see something.  I can't help with the numbers b/c i was never told anything about mine.  I hope this helps and best of luck.

My ultrasound at 4 weeks showed nothing but a sac...at 5 1/2 i saw the fetal pole. If your hcg is goimg up...isn't that a good thing? I have heard stories about patients not seeing anyhting untill 7 weeks...I would wait untill then before you do anything rash. Maybe get a second opinion. It kind of feels like they are jumping the gun a little.

I agree with guatmommy, not that you're trying to under-mind what these health professionals are saying but a lot of times they see so many patients thru out the day that every case starts to look the same to them.  I think that every case deserves to be observed on a case-by-case basis.  So I would say get a 2nd opinion before you make any decision.  Good luck to you, I'm sure everything will work out.

That is bizarre.  I think that is too early to see anything.  I just had an u/s at 5 weeks 4 days and no yolk sac- just gestational sac and they said it may be too ealry.  I would NOT schedule a D & C- I would get a 2nd opinion.
