Hello again everyone this is really embarrassing for me but there are some stuff about labor and birth that i have to make sure as i am a very shy person.
1.at the hospital, do i have to take off my clothes, can i wear it till i have to push or do i have to take it off so that the nurses can see.
2.i have quite alot of pubic hair that i dont want to shave, but its really embarrassing if i dont so what should i do.
3.i heard that people always poop when the starts pushing and i wonder how can i prevent it like is there and drink or something
there are tons of questions that i want to ask but these are the ones plauging me.Anybody who have gone through this please give you opinions and thoughts are also welcome

My first delivery was by a male...but it was a c-section
My 2nd and 3rd deliveries were by females
My 4th delivery was by a male-the one who happened to be on call and I had never met him until he walked in and said "push"
My 5th delivery was by a male-the same one who will hopefully be deliverying this baby in a few days

While My most favorite out of all the doctors I've had was the female who delivered #2.  I had no problems as far as awkwardness or anything with the rest of them..  Now with that said.  With births 1-4 I saw female Obgyn's throughout my pregnancies but it just happened to work out that when I had males deliver my female obs were on vacation or not on call.  With this pregnancy and my last pregnancy we live in a small town and there aren't many female obs to choose from....one to be exact.  The problem with her is she does not do the actually deliveries..her husband does.  So I chose a male and I have had no major issues last time or this time.

It's really a matter of what YOU are comfortable with but I've never had an issue with a male obgyn.

The doctor who delivered my first was female - but it was by far my most awkward delivery since she was a friend of my husband's family and the first (and only) time I had met her was as she walked into the delivery room while my legs were in stirrups and I was out there for everyone to see.  It was a bit disconcerting to have her chatting with my husband nonchalantly while she was examining me.

With my other two, I had a female OB/GYN but she was on office duty the days I went into labor - so two of her male colleagues were actually the ones to deliver my kids.  One was a bit rough and actually got impatient with the birth.  He was annoying at best.  But the other one was fantastic!  I've always had my reservations with male OB/GYNs because I've had some really bad pap experiences with them - but this guy was great.

It seems most women I know actually end up with male OB/GYNs and love them.  I don't think you need to worry - men can be just as wonderful as women in the delivery room.  And a man isn't going to be more likely to be inappropriate than a woman.  As for why men choose this job... you'd have to ask them.  Undoubtedly, they each have their own specific reasons.  I wonder more about male urologists - male bits aren't exactly the epitome of beauty.  Not something I would want to look at 8 hours a day.

males delivered both of my babies, but my Mother-in-law is an OB nurse and did the nursing for both deliveries...which you would think would be awkward but wasn't. having a male OB didn't bug me either time; in some ways they're more compassionate IMO, but female midwives are also incredibly compassionate.

if you're not comfortable with a male no reason to make it awkward though!

thanks for all the advice, i feel much more confident now but just another questions was your doctor who delivered your child male or female?

I am not going to MY local hosp because it is pants!! I mean if you were a nurse and someone came in 2 weeks over due what would you do?

You wouldnt send them home... and or forget that you started to induce them???

And I wouldnt go to a hosp that is rumoured to being closed down if anymore complaints are made. I was one of them who made a complaint... I was the only one in the EPAU and it took them 5 and a half hrs to see me when I was miscarrying!! so S0D THEM! :)

Argh!
I am goiing to my Boyfs local hospital where he was born which is like 20 mins away! :)

I think I am going to look round the Delievery suite there ..... soon :)

I'm just basing it on the 4 hospitals I've given birth at.  Unfortunately they all pretty well stunk!

My mum had pethadine and couldnt move cause she felt SO dizzy... Couldnt even lift her head...... and she was So far Dialated she couldnt go for a wee by herself, so they put something there and made her go to the loo...

As long as I can change after wards its fine.. :)...

I hate wearing a bra when I am laying down or whatever....
And it will annoy me. And I kinda semi know what contactions feel like... from my thing last year and I'll kinda just wanna sleep if its gonna be a long labour... so my bra is off...

Delievery and Labour wards and stuff are rather hot as well anyways... and yyou'll get REALLY hot during labour... and the hosp gowns are rather thin which is good as well....

you will be given a gown to wear and if you are planning on skin to skin contact (which i highly recommend) you wont be able to wear a bra.
i was shaved. but it doesn't really matter.
as far as pooping im fairly sure i did but my nurse was cleaning my pads underneath me every minute i was pushing and my mom (who watched everything) said they had that part of me covered up and she didn't even know.

LosingMyMindinGA- it actually depends on the hospital regarding hospital gowns. More and more places are allowing women to wear what they choose so long as there is "access" for cervix checks. And I was always allowed to wear my bra if I so chose. And I didn't give birth at a birthing center and was given the option to bring my own gown. I just chose to use a hospital gown because there's no sense in ruining something of my own, LOL!

Spiket- AMEN TO THAT! The reason they don't allow women to eat during labor is due to the risk of possible asphyxiation in the event you were to have general anesthesia. The risk is SO SO SO minimal that the rule is RIDICULOUS. My midwives also let me eat during labor but I found I wasn't hungry by the time I got to the hospital anyway. If I had been I would've freely eaten for the energy (something healthy like nuts or trail mix or whatever).

Remember that while this may be embarrassing for you this is what labor and delivery nurses/doctors see on a daily basis. Also when you are in labor you honestly will not care if you are naked or robed or covered at all. Most pregnant women want to rip everything off of them because they are experiencing so many intense sensations that one more thing touching the skin can be very aggravating.

I'm VERY modest and giving birth (three times) wasn't a problem. Don't feel you have to shave (maybe trim a little at least) and you will get a hospital gown. If it would make you feel more comfortable to wear your own gown wear one that you don't mind ruining. You can wear a bra but no underwear. There will be many fluids, including blood, so definitely wear something that you may want to toss in the trash later. Target always has cute gowns!

As for pooping- like I said this is NORMAL. If you can see this link you should check it out. One of the top ten lists (more towards the end of this page) is about the TRUTH about POOP during delivery:
http://nursingbirth.com/category/ramblings/top-ten-lists/

The doctors and nurses see it all! It's normal. And you should not take something to give yourself diarrhea beforehand.

Cassandrajane- they only use a catheter if you have an epidural. They do not routinely insert a catheter into the urethra, at least not these days, during a natural non-epidural delivery.

I know whilst in labour and you're pretty much ready to push and you need a wee they will use a Catheter (Cant spell) They did for my mum.
Where she needed a wee, she couldnt push and cause she needed to push she couldnt wee by herself! Or something....?

1)- yes they will put you in a hospital gown.I am guessing so you can be checked fast .
2) I would not worry about this, I am sure the Dr and nurses have seen it before!!
3) I didnt myself, I had a bowel movement right after my water broke but my sil did for both kids and she said they clean it up so fast she didnt even really know...my brother informed her! LOL

Every hospital I've ever known encourages socks to help keep your feet warm.  So, you should be fine.  In case you don't remember to wear them (which could be very likely), and your mother complains - well, it'll be a perfect excuse to kick her out.  A laboring mother doesn't need family drama! :)

It depends on where you are giving birth. The birth center I go to allows you to wear whatever you want. You can eat during labor there too...which probably leads to more poop. But, why would you run a marathon without any fuel? That never made any sense to me.

Like everyone said...midwives/nurses/doctors have seen it all. I'm sure they will try to respect your modesty. I know that in a lot of cultures women are draped during labor for privacy. I would tell your nurse right away that you are shy.

At all of the hospitals I've delivered at (4 different ones) they have all required that you get completely naked, remove all undergarments and then put the gown on.  After you give birth it doesn't matter.

I got like 'trampy' trackie bottoms that are covered in hairdye.... And I got special bandage pants from my termination last year... That you wear underneat average pants and then double up the pads (dont you get like EXTRA thick ones)
I also still have breast pads from my termination cause I leaked like anything.

As long as you can get changed after wards and you dont have to stay in a hosp gown then weyhey!! Do you have to take off your bra during labour??

Cassandra: I ALWAYS take my own clothes to wear during recovery.  Usually sweat pants or sleep pants and a t-shirt.  Preferably black or dark blue pants in case of bleed through.

Hannah:  As the above poster said, it's amazing how little you care about being exposed during labor.  I, too, am not exactly proud of my body but during labor you really just don't think about it.  BEsides I've seen some of the women who come into my ob's office pregnant.  Some of them are extremely obese and dont' have good hygiene.  If the l & d nurses can handle THAT then *I* must be a walk in the park for them :)

with my son i gave birth in a birthing centre so i had my own room and was naked pretty much all the way through! Trust me you dont even notice you have no clothes on! So having just a gown on if you do i wouldnt imagine would be noticeable at all! I personally prefer to be naked throughout and i HATE my body with a vengance! I had quite a bit of pubic hair with my son and nothing was mentioned about it! Again you wont even notice it while your in labor as your mind will be on other things! I know with my son the poop was just there waiting to come out but the midwife held it in(my husband kindly told me this!lol!) If it does come out like someone else said they just sweep it away with out you noticing! A lot of women reckon they didnt poop but i wouldnt be surprised if a lot of them did they just dont realise it! Besides for me pushing out a bby felt like I was doing a giant poop anyway! lol! Sorry if this is all TMI! You willbe fine hunni! Good luck and any other questions feel free to PM me! Nothing embarrasses me when it comes to talkingabout things like this so ask away! :) x

It has to be an actualy HOSPITAL gown. I have heard they make like designer hospital gowns you can buy on your own but I think its dumb to spend that much money on something you will probably bleed on.

I don't know about in the UK but here in the US they require the hospital gowns.....unless you are doing this at a birthing center or something like that.
