Question about First Appointment

Okay, so on the 29th of this month is when I have my first appointment and I will about 8 weeks.  My question though is when they do the pap smear do they open your cervix?  Is it necessary that I have the pap smear done?  Can't I decline because I don't want them openin the cervix or doing anything with it at this point.  I'm nervous over everything and I've been doing really good with eating and getting water in and the like.

You have every right to be excited. Especially in the beginning we are all worried about how are babies are developing. They're too small to be told if everything is going well. For the first 3 months we are expecting the worst. Please keep us updated on how you and your lil bean are doing! I hope that everything goes well for you.

Thanks guys - I guess I'm just freaking out a little bit, I don't want anything to go wrong with this pregnancy - I want everything to go well.  I know I will let them do what they need to do - but I really hope they listen to me when I tell them I either wanna be squeezed in for a quick ultrasound check that day or the next day - just need that reassurance that baby has a heartbeat and everything looks for how far along I will be.

The 29th is creeping up on me, and I'm getting excited.

personally i think it's very important to have a pap smear done..since you did have unprotected sex they will check for some diseases..or infections...also i found out that i had pre-cervical cancer when i had got my first pap at my first doctors visit..and if i didnt have that pap done i would not have known i had it..and it could have been alot worse then it really was...my opinion! you wont know if anything is wrong or alright unless you have one..even tho you feel like you are healthy some things that go around do not have any symptoms!

They don't open the cervix. They use a large Q-Tip to brush the cervix and test for cervical cancers or cells that could develop into cervical cancer or HPV.

most doctor offices will check it unless you've had one done recently.  Pap smears are no biggie, it doesn't hurt or anything and they don't open the cervix.

I use a midwife and she always gives me the option of having a pap smear or any tests for that matter, unless she sees a need for it. I never had one done with my son. Tell them your concerns and I'm sure they will explain everything to you. It's probably fine though. Some docs require it, while others don't.

no, the cervix is not opened during a pap smear. Relax. the first appt is a bunch of questions and a simple exam. oh, and you pee in a cup.
