Rant..about cribs...

So Conner my youngest DS has been trying to climb out of his crib lately, and he gets his legs stuck between the bars of the crib. It has left bruises so nasty looking that it appears someone is beating him, and I know thats exactly what i'm going to have to explain in court(going through a divorce/custody).

I know my ex husband will make it sound or accuse me or DF of beating my son, which FAR from the truth, thats my baby and I could never do that. He has called CPS on us before, saying that we're cooking meth in our home, and that the house is not clean. He also called Animal welfare on me, saying my dog(whom was dying of cancer) was being starved to death because I couldn't afford to feed him. Neither CPS or Animal welfare seen anything that gave truth to the accusations, and so they went on their marry little way.

I don't know what I could possibly do to keep this baby from getting his legs stuck in the rails of the crib. A bumper wouldn't work because he will just step on it until it's wedged under the mattress. Should I take a picture of him when he is stuck in the crib rails? Along with the bruises? I just know my ex will try and use this against me in divorce/custody court, and I need ways to prove where the bruises came from. Maybe a video? Any help is definitely appreciated. I'm at such a loss.

Also any suggestions as to how I can keep him from putting his legs through the rails? He is much to young for a toddler bed(2yrs in Oct) and he shares a room as of now with the older 2 boys who sleep in a bunk bed and i'm terrified Conner will try and climb the stairs of the bunk bed and get hurt that way.

My brother has been in a bed since he was 1 and a half 2 ish, and he used to climb up my sisters ladder on her bed, even though they had different rooms, so we got these play mat puzzle peices things that you can put on the floor they are foam and things and so they are soft. But I swear my brother has no fear he jumps over our garden fence which is like 3 metres high! so we gotta get a higher one and he is only 3. And the court wont say anything bad about it... My brother used to have those bruises which is why we moved him into a big boys bed. But we wouldnt leave the room until he was asleeep and then he had a stair gate. And he had a side barrier nett thing on the side of his bed... But then he broke his bed cause he thought it was funny to take the matress off and jump on the slates! 3 yr olds!!!
What are you to do with them!

Feather2e- The ladder is built into the bunk bed so i'm not sure.

Doulasummer- We don't have another room to put him in. I am in a 2 bedroom house so all 3 boys have to share a room.

I'm going to be looking at getting one of the crib tents that was mentioned on here already. Not cheap but worth it in my situation.

Is there a way to remove the ladder from the bunk bed?  Maybe he should be sleeping in another room that is a safer area for him?

I suggest you also switch to a toddler bed before he causes serious injury.  My bil broke his leg and needed surgery at 9 months from catching his leg in his crib (mind you 28 years ago, but it happens).  Also, some children do not even use the bars to climb and are able to pull themselves up and over the rail and fall, which is also injury.

My son was moved to a mattress on the floor (I think toddler beds are a waste, so this was step 1 to transitioning to a twin bed) at 16 months because I wanted to avoid cribs (co-sleepers).  I wanted to nip it in the bud before it started.  His twin bed was the bottom of a bunk bed.  It wasn't until this year we put the top bunk on (he is 6) because we just didn't need it, but now he has friends staying over.

Is there enough room to put a mattress on the floor for the boy in the top bunk and take the ladder away, just in the beginning to get Conner used to the toddler bed?

I have had this same problem with my DD for a while now. She is only 10 months old. She will wake me up screaming bloody murder. She is the only one of my kids to ever have this problem. My DS is 21 months now and using the same crib my two older boys used and my DD is in a crib idenical to the other crib so I know it wasnt because of the crib. I am interested to know how the mesh thing works for you. Taylor doesnt seem to be doing it much anymore, thank goodness! But I know what you mean about not wanting to do the toddler bed quit yet. Dalton (21 month) wont fall asleep in his crib anymore and has been such a pain to get to bed, I know a toddler bed would solve our problems but I am scared to death of him getting up before us and getting into something. His new thing is to open the oven. He is gonna be the death of me, lol. Sorry I didnt mean to hyjack your post:~( Hope you get something that works.
Maybe you could video or take pictures of his legs stuck in the rails tonight so if your ex tries to be an *** you have proof that your not beating your son???

My son is 20months and has been in a normal bed with a side rail for the last 4months. We made the change because he did manage to climb out of his crib when he was only 15.5 months. It is an antique metal crib and he is the 4th generation to use it.

He loves his bed, sleeps all night and has day time naps in it without any problems.

Perhaps you could try putting your son in a light sleeping bag to stop him from climbing.

I wanted to add, he (Conner) has already attempted to climb the latter to the bunk beds, and fell off of it. Granted it was the first stair, but it only takes 1 time for him to reach the top bunk and fall off which could result in worse injuries, injuries i'm not wanting to deal with right now.

Feather2e- Like I said I would do the toddler bed, except he shares a bedroom with my 6yr old and 4 yr old whom sleep in a bunk bed. I don't want my 2 yr old climbing the stairs to the bunk bed and falling resulting in more harm than just bruises on his legs from the crib.

alaysha- Boyfriend and I are looking at those now, trying to find a wal-mart near us that way we could stop him from getting stuck tonight.

My son is in a toddler bed( about 1 month now) and he will be 2  Oct21st. Toddler beds are for 18 months and up. I was afraid at first but he is much happier in the bed than he was in his crib.

I forget what it is called but you can buy them at babiesrus or online at amazon. Its a mesh tent thing that goes under the mattress and over the crib. Its used to keep babies in and bugs and things out.
