Sex

I hope that caught your attention.  The correct term when finding out if the baby is a male or female is SEX, not gender.  No prenatal test is going to tell you your child's gender.

A child's SEX is biological.  XX or XY, penis or vagina.
A child's GENDER is psychological.

The majority of the time they do match up but they are NOT interchangeable.

I aint doubting you or being a d!ck about what you are saying cause personally I thought it was the same thing... I dont understand...

Because when you 'make Love' that can also be known as sex
I do feel really stupid right now haha...
I cant think of what it is called but does that make the word Sex a word where is has MANY meanings...

Just to help out here:

Gender is the wide set of characteristics that are seen to distinguish between male and female. It can extend from sex to social role or gender identity. As a word, "gender" has more than one valid definition. In ordinary speech, it is used interchangeably with "sex" to denote the condition of being male or female. In the social sciences, however, it refers specifically to socially constructed and institutionalized differences such as gender roles.[1] The World Health Organization (WHO), for example, uses "gender" to refer to "the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women".[2] Some cultures have distinct gender-related social roles that can be considered distinct from male and female, such as the hijra of India and Pakistan.

While the social sciences and gender studies approach gender as a social construct, the natural sciences, regard biological and behavioral differences in males and females as influencing the development of gender in humans; both inform debate about how far biological differences influence gender identity formation. Biologist and feminist academic Anne Fausto-Sterling rejects the discourse of biological versus social determinism and advocates a deeper analysis of how interactions between the biological being and the social environment influence individuals' capacities.[3]

When you go to your 19 week ultrasound and if you want to know if it's a boy or girl they call it gender determination

Just know how this will cause some huge debate.  They are interchangeable.

Yes, they are interchangeable.  Most people that ask on here are asking in a medical sense, and in the medical community, "gen"der does refer to "gen"itals.  In sociology, gender does more refer to gender identity.  But on these communities, it is highly improbable that people are asking in a social science sense.

That is a complete sociological view on the word. Posting this is pointless because no matter what people are going to keep saying it. Its an interchangable word and some people feel weird writing "sex" since they view the word as a personal thing between them and their significate other. I can understand that you find it frustrating but other than starting a debate this post did, and will continue to do, nothing.

Meh. Personally I thought it meant the same thing, Because I was at hosp once and on the form my sister was playing with pretending she was a doc it had Name: She put Abi, Age: 6 Sex: she put No thank you..

So I think its better for it to be called Gender on forms and things, Easier.
Yes Genitals can be changed. But at my last scan my other half said, at the next scan will we find out the sex, the sonographer said you might be able to find out the gender....

It's like the saying you say Potato, I say potAto...  Pronoucing the a as the vowel and or the A as a whats sit called.. Sound. Its hard to explain over text.

Some people say SEX others say Gender. We know what they mean, its not a big deal.
Professionals use either, or. Whatever they wanna use at the time....

Making love is called Sex, medical and other forms say Gender or Sex... doesnt matter :)

We know what everyone means :)

If we started beefing on MedHelp when someone uses language that is less than technically correct, we would have to start at pregnate and virginia.  The niceties of the sociological versus the common-use definitions of sex and gender would be graduate-level studies by comparison.

That made me laugh so hard because it's so true...we'd also have to address every time someone inappropriately refers to ejaculation as "nutting" or "blowing a load" (I shudder at both of those descriptives, by the way).

Both of you made me laugh. (I also hate both of those descriptions Ashelen) Everyone more or less understands what someone means when either of the words are used. It may not be appropriate, but it's so much bother to try and correct someone each and every time it's done because it's so often. We all more or less understand what they mean each time anyways.

I agree GA!  The people that post on here are not asking for grammatical lessons.  They are asking if they are having a freaking boy or girl or if the sonographer can tell at a certain point.  Can't we just be simple and answer the questions without correcting every little thing someone says?  And yes, the newer posts definitely had me laughing.

I Need to pee so bad... but this post... I cant bare to leave it, But if I read one more thing I will wizzle myself!

yeah in posts I will say Fook instead of F*ck because its politer and things I will replace swear words with funnier words. But text language absolutely piddles me off. You were taught to spell for a reason. Yes if you're dyslexic then I am sorry. :) But ARGH it does my noodle in! LOL...

People say stuff.. Who cares. Everyone has their own thing for things.. Like Ashelen says people say BLOWING A LOAD for Ejactulation... HAHAHA. But we know what they mean. And it does get ammusing with all the new words and saying people come up with...

But we cant correct everyone on spellings or corrections. We wouldn't be a medical help forum for pregnancy WE WOULD BE A FREAKING DICTIONARY!!!!!!!!!!

I am so not kidding about hating the word "nutting"...I was sitting in bed reading posts with the laptop on my lap and ran across someone saying "and then he nutted in me" and I literally shuddered and made a noise in disgust apparently because DH was like "what?" and I was like "I think that is the single most repulsive descriptive I have ever heard for ejaculation..I mean..honestly..the PICTURES that my head conjures when that word comes up...awful, just awful..."

You know, when I wrote the post saying after pregnate and virginia, knowing the distinction between sex and gender is graduate-level studies, I had another sentence to insert there, involving the words "nutted" and "cummed" (as in, "he cummed in me,") but I thought the point was better made with the more simple examples, so I took it out.  "Nutted" really does gross me out.  And I always wonder what the point is in spelling come wrong -- if people are going to say "***," why can't they just say "come?"  We also had a poster who had problems with her "utares," which I always thought sounded like a Star Trek location ("Captain, we're about to enter the Utares Nebula.")
