Ultrasound??

Hi guys...hope all are well today. I have a question, I go tomorrow for my first ultrasound. The paper with the thing for the ultrasound that I have to give to the tech to actually get the ultrasound says on it

PELVIC ULTRASOUND
TRANS ABDOMINAL/TRANS VAGINAL

Does anyone know what this means and what they are going to do?

I actually had one when i was about 7 weeks along and it didnt hurt at all! So i am sure you will be just fine.... Like tea_berries said i think the two ultrasounds are a bit different and the uncomfortableness level is different as well.... and you totally forget that they have something stuck up there when you look at the screen and see your little one.... You should be able to see the baby and the heart beat! So it would be so worth it. And i am sure they will allow whom ever you want in the room with you! Good Luck

transvaginal ultrasound for pregnant women and for non pregnant women just getting tested for some fibroids and cysts is a bit different when it comes to pain.  It was uncomfortable for me when they did it for my PCOS.  because she kept poking at the sides and went in totally.  When you are pregnant the sonographer told me they are only going at the tip of the vagina and they will do it lightly.  because they don't want to go very far and interfere with the baby's location.  I did it too when I was pregnant and it was not painful at all since they did it gently due to pregnancy.  they did it since I have a tipped uterus and it's hard to see baby at an early stage with the uterus location.  I did not see a heartbeat at the time but he confirmed that everything is fine.   I was only five weeks then so it's a bit early to see it with my condition but with later ultrasounds they did it on the belly because the baby is big enough.

They do early ultrasounds if you have history of miscarriage or bleeding also to make sure baby is in the right position and not ectopic.

yep--they can see the baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  like u will actually see him!!! and u will hear the heartbeat at every appointment, including tomorrow. the baby will be so tiny, i think at this stage they are the size of a grain of rice......but, with the tehnology we have...it is amazing how u can see the eyes, belly, arms.  it's so neat and really seals the deal that u are preg.

it is uncomfortable tho.  for sure.  but hey.......it's worth it in the end for sure.

dude, im still confused. what is DB?

I guess I will deal with whatever they need to do. As long as I can see that the baby is ok and healthy..I will do whatever...I just remember it being uncomfortable...

Thanks to all of you....

I guess I don't want them to not do it, I want to be able to see the baby. I don't want to not see it. My dr is the one who wanted me to get this done so early. I think its cause I miscarried before. But still, I had this done when I had my cysts and it was horrible...I hated it. I don't know how I am going to do it now, but I have to. I can't just sit and be comfortable with that.

Is it a definite that they will see the heartbeat? I mean, that is why they are doing it, to make sure everything is ok and to see the heartbeat. So its a definite right? And can that hurt the baby??

Jen, DH is dear husband, but I meant to put DB

It could be either it says trans abdominal as well. They might try that way first but if they don't get a good look they might have to do it vaginally.

they do this type of ultrasound because it is the only way to see the baby.......at this stage.....because the baby is so small.  they cannot do it over ur belly because he/she is too tiny and wouldnt show up!
but, it's insane what u can see.
with my son, and that ultrasound, he looked like a little alien....but i could still see eye slits....u can still totally tell u got a b n the t!

u said ur DH cant go in the room?  what is a DH?

I am not sure exactly why, but I think it is more accurate. You can give your doctor's office a call and ask why they are doing a transvaginal, and if you decide the reason isn't worth it, request a normal ultrasound. Don't do anything you're not comfortable with or feel is necessary. My hubby was with me during mine.... I'm sure you can have your MIL with you, I can't imagine a reason why not.

Why do they have to do it this way?? I had this before when I had my cysts, and I hated it...Oh gosh, this isn't good. I guess my DHs mother won't be allowed in the room right??

They will be using an instrument that is placed in your vagina to see up into your uterus, as opposed to the typical over-the-belly technique. I had this done at 18 weeks. It doesn't hurt but is a bit uncomfortable. If you have any more ultrasounds they'll probably be the over belly kind. No worries... it sounds like a bigger deal than it really is! Plus you'll get a great view of your baby. :)
