What's back labour feel like?

I have a question for women who have had back labour. I just got out of my doctors appointment and I'm apparently contracting, but I can't feel them. What I do feel is a horrid pain in my lower back on either side, and often at the same time I feel it in my lower stomach too. The pain gets to the point where it's hard to remember to breathe (DF keeps having to remind me to breathe through it) and my brain only focuses on the pain. DF just timed one I had just now and it lasted about 30 seconds. I'm not sure how far apart they are. (he's keeping count because I can't focus) Could this be the start of labour, or is my body just being cruel to me?

I had bad back labour during my first delivery.  I had expected to feel menstrual type crampiness because that's what everyone said true labour contractions felt like - instead, it was all in my lower back, coming in waves....and very intense.  Not to scare you, but the pain became so bad for me that I was vomiting during my contractions.  I had been induced and things ramped up fairly quickly and the epidural saved me.  Still, from what I understand, back labour isn't caused by being induced - it's a function of how the baby is laying....posterior or anterior.

This could definitely be the start of labour - if you can't focus through a contraction then it means that they're getting stronger and, likely, more regular.  Once I couldn't focus enough to talk through my contractions, I knew I was in "true" labour.  Good luck!! :)

Well I called my doctor and I was once again told they want me to come in. I was contracting on the phone with them and they want me to go to L&D to get checked out. The pain is still coming about every 10-15 minutes, so I don't really want to go, because I don't think it's true labour, but they still want me to get seen. The only part I dread is they hook you up to measure the stuff and you have to lay on your back, and that's what hurts the most. I can't lay down. I suppose we'll see what they say soon enough.

Ugh I had back labor and it was horrible. I wish it on no one. I would for sure go to the doctor and get checked out since if you cant concentrate through them then it could be a sign that real labor has started! Good luck pretty lady!

I HAD BACK LABOR WITH MY SON.  I TOO WAS EXPECTING MENSTRAL LIKE CRAMPS, BUT ALL I GOT WAS HORRIBLE LOWER BACK PAIN, I NEVER ONCE GOT A CONTRACTION IN MY STOMACH, ALL BACK LABOR.  IT WAS ON BOTH SIDES, AND IT HURT SOOOOO BAD, ESPECIALLY AFTER THEY BROKE MY WATER, I WAS IN TEARS AND FELT LIKE MY BACK WAS BREAKING...

BUT THE NIGHT BEFORE LABOR ACTUALLY STARTED, I WAS LAYING IN BED ON MEDHELP LOL, AND I GOT UP TO GO PEE, AND I GOT TO THE BATHROOM DOOR AND I JUST HAD A HORRIBLE PAIN SHOOT THROUGH MY BACK. AND I HAD TO STOP AND SIT ON THE FLOOR CAUSE IT HURT SO BAD. IT WENT AWAY AND I WENT TO THE BATHROOM AND THERE WAS MY BLOODY SHOW!  I WENT TO BED THAT NIGHT, GOT UP THE NEXT DAY, TRIED TO DO MY WORKOUT AND CLEANING, AND JUST COULDNT DO ANYTHING BUT LAY IN BED AND CRY, EVERYONE KEPT TELLING ME TO GO INTO THE DOCTOR, BUT I DIDNT WANT TO CAUSE IT WAS AN HOUR AWAY AND DB WOULD HAVE HAD TO LEAVE WORK EARLY TO TAKE ME AND I DIDNT WANT IT TO BE A FALSE ALARM, FINALLY I CALLED L&D AND THEY TALKED ME INTO COMING... IT HURT SO BAD ON THE WAY THERE.  I GOT THERE AND I WENT PEE AFTER GETTING UNDRESSED AND IT WAS BLEEDING AGAIN.  SHE CHECKED ME AND I WAS 4CM DIALTED, FULLY EFFACED AND MY WATER WAS BULDING. I WAS IN LABOR, AND I GOT REALLY SCARED. LOL.... BACK LABOR I HEAR IS THE WORSE, I CANT SAY IT IS CAUSE IVE ONLY HAD ONE LABOR AND IT WAS BACK LABOR, BUT I HEAR ITS 10 TIMES WORSE.   SO NOW I THINK I COULD DO IT AGAIN AS LONG AS IT ISNT BACK LABOR AGAIN LOL

HAVE YOU HAD ALOT OF BACK PAIN THROUGHOUT YOUR PREGNACY?  I DID EVERYDAY, EVERYONE TOLD ME I WAS GONNA HAVE BACK LABOR CAUSE OF IT.  AND I DID.. ITS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO GO IN WHEN YOU DONT FEEL SOMETHING IS RIGHT... GOOD LUCK I CANT WAIT TO HEAR FROM YOU

Well I'm in early labour, but it's not enough to keep me. I'm 70% effaced, baby is at station 0 but I'm only 1.5cm dilated now. All that pain for nothing. Gah!!! My cervix is still posterior as well. (not sure what the means) any suggestions for things that help back labour?

EPIDURALS!!!  (haha - sorry, couldn't resist....)  Honestly.....I tried Demerol before I went the epidural route, and it didn't even touch the pain, it just made me drowsy.  And sick.

Good luck - it's so exciting that you're in the early stages of labour!!!!!  All my best!! :-)

Good Luck Girl! I know you might be exhausted already but if you can tolerate some walking then I would work on that. And, maybe a nice bath to help with the back pain. Otherwise, get your protein in for energy and stay hydrated!
Best Wishes and keep us informed.

When I had back labor with Grey the epidural didn't kill the pain...whereas with my "tummy" labor with Kahlan the epidural worked so well that I let it wear off and by the time I started pushing I hadn't pushed the button in about an hour and a half so it was mostly worn off....but with Grey I kept mashing the button and it just never knocked out the pain....so it was very painful.

it felt like crunching, squeezing, twisting, intense lower back pain. if you've had it, you'll know what I mean..and if not, then you're probably not having back labor lol.

also in case you are having back labor (and are going to read this before you deliver) the thing that helped me the most was tilting the delivery table...the minute my MIL tilted the table the pain eased out of my back and I was able to push without screeching in pain.

I meant to say you're probably not having "full-blown" back labor.

I was in early labor for 24 hours with Kahlan....but once she started coming she came fast....I hope it goes that way for you!

like I said tilting the table helped me the most..so maybe make sort of a wedge with pillows on your couch or bed so that you can lie down at an angle...hope it helps you! definitely consider it when pushing even if you're pushing on your side or whatnot.

good luck girl hope your little one comes soon! back labor is the stinks

The only thing that even touched the pain for me was sitting in the shower on a birthing ball with really hot water hitting my back! I would not suggest Demerol to anyone!! If your already tired all you will do is make you 'pass out' during contractions... You still FEEL and hear everything going on!!! Its horrible stuff!!!!

I had back labour on my first 4 years ago and it was horrible i never experienced pain like it. There was a reason for it my waters broke about 2 days before i had my daughter and i carried her in my back for my whole pregnancy and when all my waters were gone she lay on a nerve and everytime i would have a contraction my hip would come out of place. the epadural was a god send anyone ive ever spoke to says back labour is worst. Best of luck

Well the contractions I'm having were measuring off the chart, but they're still really sporadic. I'm trying really hard to breathe slowly an evenly through them, but it's hard. When they hit I just want to die. It feels like my back is being ripped apart. I can't really walk too well either. And movement I make seems to jump start another contraction. I can handle the ones in my stomach so far, but the back pain is putting me in tears and it's all I can do to just breathe. I really hope this means something is going to happen soon.

I would go for a walk. I know it is the furthest thing on your mind right now especially if you are in pain but if you walk it will put pressure on your cervix and make you dilate more. I'm so excited! Your little one is going to be here soon! :)

This website had positions you may want to try for back labor/pain.

http://transitiontoparenthood.com/ttp/parented/pain/positions.htm

I just remembered by friend telling me she was on her hands and knees to get through the back pain. She even rode to the birthing center in that position.

sounds like you're getting close girl!  i am soooo sorry you're having back labor.....the labor pains with my daughter hurt but NOTHING like the back labor with my son....almost as bad as kidney stones and only less painful because labor has an end while stones can last weeks...

anyway sorry babbling lol.....when did theyt say to come in? some women's ctrx are never entirely regular....

I had back labor with both my children. The only way that helped was to be on hands and knees and if you have someone to firmly rub your lower back.Get the epidural when you can.

There is news indeed!! Kylie Marie was born at 8:27 am after almost a day of HORRIBLE back labour and an hour and 30 minutes of pushing. We went back in and I was told I was 4cm, and in active labour. So I got an epidural asap and it was a god send. Imma try to sleep soon. I'm exhausted an slept about an hour if that. (btw, breastfeeding is going amazingly. She has a perfect latch. I just need to learn how to hold her properly) I'll update better later when my brain doesn't feel like fuzz.
