So i'm thinking of going on the depo shot for birth control. How long does it take to become effective?

Depo takes effect as soon as you get it. It worked great for me as far as not getting pregnant but I had horrible mood swings, acne, and my appetite was out of control. It doesn't do everyone like that but all birth control has some type of side effects!

Keep in mind that if you want to get pregnant again, it can take up to a year once you go off depo to be able to. My friend is going through this right now and it's tough. It also messed her periods up pretty bad. I would recommend looking at a different form of birth control.

I was on the depo and was bleeding for 12 weeks and when I got off I had very heavy periods to the point I would feel faint. My mom enjoyed the depo for 8 years but did gain weight with it. Within 2 months of stopping hers she lost 15-20 pounds without dieting. Also her periods are now very painful n heavy.

And I ate the same way I normally do regardless of pregnancy or birth control. So it wasnt my eating habits causing the wieght gain

I tried depo after my second baby. I waited until my period was normal then started the shot. I was told it takes affect immediately but I dont know. I do know I had horrible weight gain and it made me bleed for 6 months straight with no breaks. My doctor had to put me on the pill to counter it to fix the bleeding

Whatever method of birth control you get do your research on the pros and cons.. Each persons body is different and will react different to different types of birth control.

Depo does not cause weight gain. It depends on how the person eats while on it. I had it and it was very effective! And it even took my period away until i stopped using it. I got pregnant.

Depo is awful! It causes serious weight gain, hormonal imbalances, and it is not always effective.  My mother got pregnant twice on depo. And I suffered all of the other side effects. When I decided to go off of it I had very bad periods! Nuva ring is a very good one though I'd recommend looking into it.
