This post is from 2008 :)
I've been a NICU nurse for 30 years. Babies come into the world needing to breathe the air, not aspirate dirty bath water. It is the natural way. They come from water into air. The hospital's policy is meant to protect your baby's, why would you insist on anything that may be harmful? You realize that hospitals nowadays will do anything to please their clients, so if you insist you may get your wish but your baby will end up with pneumonia from contaminated water you've sat in for a while. Choose well and good luck to you.
You can also buy a birth pool online, get a midwife, and see if your hospital will just allow you to use one of their rooms to deliver in without any assistance from their staff. That's what I'm trying to do with the hospital I hope to use...otherwise I'll have to travel 4 hours to the nearest birthing center. I'm determined to have a water birth, so my husband and I have decided that if we have to go to the birthing center 4 hours away that I will just stay in a hotel near the center for the 2 weeks before my due date. :)
Usually in a birthing they don't offer pain meds, at least the ones I have checked here where I live don't. If you really wanted pain relief as a just in case, you should probably go to the hospital then, but then you can't have the water birth. They make is so difficult!! lol.
Thank you! I hope I have a smooth delivery soon!! =)
I live in Albuquerque.. there should be some. I couldn't find any today but maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Do they offer any pain meds at a birthing center?
I'm pretty sure I wanna go all natural but the meds would be a nice plan B just in case it's too intense.
I hope your birth goes well!
Yea most hospitals will let you labor in the tub, but not give birth. I am going to a birth center so I can have a water birth. There are 2 hospitals within 15 min. from there, and also another one about 20 min. away. So I am covered if anything were to go wrong. I would try a homebirth....but my hubby won't go for it...he said that would be stuck in his head for life like how it happened and in what room...lol. I don't blame him I guess. (plus we rent right now) You don't have any birthing centers near by I am guessing??
The hospital that I deliver at has the same rule.
I was told that I could labor but not deliver in the tub b/c the state had not come in to do an inspection of the birthing tubs to give them their stamp of approval. Meaning all has to be remodeled and brought up to code. I guess for me I was trying to figure out if its sanitary enough for me to labor in I should be able to deliver in the tub, but I guess not. Once I thought about it though, I cant get an epidural in the tub so I guess I'm not too disappointed.
That's stupid...i thought about water birth but I'm to queasy and the bloody water would get me hurling no matter how precious the outcome would be
No, none of the hospitals that accept Medicaid offer water birth. Everyone says if I want a water birth then it will have to be a home birth..
But I dont want to have a home birth in case something goes wrong.
do you have any other hospitals close by you that may offer the water birth method?
