medication for nausea

Hi, I'm almost 9 wks pregnant. i recently posted a question regarding how to deal with nausea and got many helpful responses...needless to say I have tried every suggestion that was post and more....ginger everything, B6, sea bands, small meals, preggie pops (which now make me sick), and much more. However, I started to vomit everything up on Saturday and now I can hardly take down any food. I can't even drink water without dry heaving. I put food up to my mouth and can't even put it in. I've pretty much been in bed the whole weekend...I put a call into my gyno in order to prescribe me something. I'm not a fan of medication while pregnant and really nervous, but I just can't take this....and now I can't even eat...plus I cannot function at work this way...has anybody taken anti-nausea meds. while pregnant...how safe are they....I think i may have to just give in....

Thanks for all of the responses. My OB prescribed Zofran today. I waited up until tonight to take it to see how far I could get without...but the evenings is when I start to really vomit, so as soon as I felt it coming on I took one....and I do have to say that its really making a difference! I still feel a bit nauseous, but I don't feel the need to vomit...which is great....thanks again!!

I am 14w2d and just stopped the whole morning sickness thing a couple days ago.  It really kicked into gear around week 8 - and weeks 9 through 12 I could not keep anything down... NOTHING.. Now I am chowing down on 3 slices of pizza... this baby SOOO loves pizza.. i am sick of it and do not want to eat it again.. but it really is the only thing I can eat and Know that I can hold down!!  It should wear off in a couple more weeks....

The meds are super safe.  Phenergan will make you sleepy so I suggest Zofran.  I may have been one that responded to your last post.  Not sure because I have responded to quite a few nausea posts lately but def get on something.  I ended up in the hospital last time and if you can't even keep down water, your doctor may do the same thing to you just to get some fluids in you.  The baby will get what it needs from you so don't worry about that.  It's you that will suffer and go without nutrition.  The Zofran will make you constipated though, so make sure to take a stool softener, which is also safe.  Take care and I am so sorry.  I know how awful this is!

Im sorry you are going through this. I am bout 7weeks and im right there with you. I finally called by ob and got meds, however didnt think they would work. This is my 4th baby and I have been like this with ALL of them the whole pregnancy!! They tried me on everything with my others and NOTHING worked, I couldnt even keep down water it was really bad. I was in and out of the hospital dehydrated all the time. But thankfully they are working this time for the most part. But I have 3 very healthy girls, so I would say get the meds!! Good luck and hope you feel better!!

Sometimes is good enough for me...I'm vomiting at the end of the day mostly so everything I'm eating is coming up....I put one little thing in my mouth and out it comes up...or I really just can't eat anything at all because I feel so sick. I went from feeling sick in the mornings, to the mornings and evenings, to the entire day and night...to on the edge of vomiting every moment of the day to the point where I can't even put food to my mouth...again I'm glad I'm not the only one. Thanks for the advice!

mostly just the vomiting, unfortunately....the hormones won't give us a break with the nausea! sometimes you'll experience some relief from the nausea with the meds too, but it's mostly just the vomiting. but once you can be eating light meals regularly, that helps with the nausea.

Thanks for all the suggestions and I know that I am not the only one who absolutely hates food at this point...I can't even watch food commercials. I feel better about taking the meds....though I have already developed an aversion to water...it, like everything else makes me sick...the only thing i can get down in gingerale....oh and do the medications relieve the nausea or just vomiting or both??...the vomiting is only half the battle..

I'm sorry your nausea has gotten worse. I know how you feel. I'm 10 weeks pregnant today and am nauseous right now. It is hard to function at work. Tell me about it! It's bad. Talk to your doctor and trust him/her. Anti-nausea meds are pretty safe. Your doctor will give you something to make you feel better.

Now that you have been vomiting, please don't forget to increase your water intake. You need to drink plenty of water and it actually helps with the nausea issue. Hopefully, you are not like me. I have developed food aversion and that includes water. Gotta force myself to drink. Try to stay hydrated, and rest assure it is safe to take whatever your doctor prescribes.

Good Luck.

I was presecribed (I THINK phenergan) with my last preganncy but I never got it filled.  I was able to deal with it, I was still able to eat small amounts even tho I was throwing up in the mornings (mostly becuause it was triggered by sinus drainage).  This time around I'm so nauseas I can't eat.  I haven't thrown up once but my stomach always feels horrible and the thought of almost ALL foods makes me feel disgusted, the smell of most foods makes me want to hurl.  I was able to eat a small bowl of cereal this morning that made me sick the whole time i was eating it.  Since then, the only things I can even put close to my mouth are drinks and popsicles.  Every once in awhile I find something that you wouldn't expect someone with an upset stomach to be able to eat but i can (like hashbrowns w/cheese) I don't have any suggestions for you but I can definately sympathize.

They are considered very safe. I took both zofran and phenergan while pregnant with my daughter, and I've taken phenergan twice with this pregnancy. needless to say my daughter is VERY healthy, no problems whatsoever, and I'm 15wks with this one and he looks very healthy. they have been prescribing zofran and phenergan for a LONG time for pregnant women with no known birth defects or problems. don't feel guilty!

do what you have to do, take them when you feel you need to, and try to accept the fact that if your OB is prescribing it, he/she believes that it is safe, and that the anti-nausea meds ARE considered safe by almost all of the medical profession. dehydration is way worse for baby!
