It will tell you if you are 24/36 hrs away; although i've seen the case where it tells 5 days before.  But you have to test everyday (sometimes even twice a day so that you don't miss your surge).  In those cases it is due to the body getting ready to ovulate but not releasing the egg until much later (if at all).  DH and I starting BD every other day immediately after AF and then every day on my fertile days (with the exception of the day before I ovulated--I thought I was out because we missed that day!...lol...luckily i wasn't!)  The temping worked for me on the first try and i recommend it to everybody.  I understand what you mean about your little boy.  I have a daughter that turned two in May.

Temping doesn't help if you wait until you temp rises to have sex; by that time it is already too late.  Like Michelledj said you must take it as soon as you wake up without getting out of bed.  If you see a rise of about .04 it means that you ovulated the day before.  It is great to get to know your body and start pinpointing when do you ovulate; that way you can time sex accordingly (start having sex 4-5 days every day before ovulation).  I started using it last month and was able to clearly pinpoint my ovulation day on the first month trying it.  I used a ovulation calendar that told me more or less when I should ovulate and started having sex 5 days before my predicted ovulation until I saw a rise.  Now i'm pregnant! It's great how much you can learn about your body just by doing this.  Plus it is very cheap.  You just have to take it at the same time before getting up religiously.  You can look at my chart in my profile if you'ld like.  Good luck to you!

i find it complicated too but as I understand it, you take your temperature first thing on waking, do not get up to use the loo first or talk or sit up if you can help it (I have a thermometer next to my bed and a pad and pen to note it down after i have taken it!
Once you see a peak in temperature it means you have ovulated - I was doing this method but found it very complicated and my temp was up and down and all over the place on the charts plus I think you need to do this over quite a few months to become accurate at it and reading the results. SO, I have gone back to using ovualtion test kits, which detect an LH surge which means you are about to ovulate (in the next 24/36 hours) I also like the fact this can tell you when you are about to ovulate rather than predicting you have ovulated (an egg is only fertile for a certain time after ovualtion) therefore having more sex leading up to and while you are ovulating gives better chance of conceiving than if you were to increase sex after ovulation (I think so anyway)   :)
good luck
