newborn sleep

I don't think my newborn gets enough sleep.  Is that bad? What do I do to get her to sleep? I am a ftm and I never had younger siblings or anything.. I need advice and help...

Waking your baby to eat does not cause an increased risk of SIDS.  Physical abnormalities, overheating and low birth weight are key factors.   I wake my 10 day old every 2-3 hours during the day and let her sleep at night as long as she will.  I am nursing but I also want her to not get her days and nights confused .  This is baby #4 for me and I always woke them to eat during the day.  Babies usually sleep 16-18 hours a day so as long as you get that you are fine.  I also got a Moby carrier for this baby, lifesaver!!  The minute she goes in she passes out!

The baby will still burp even if she is asleep. You can just keep patting her back. It will still force the burp up. I am anxiously waiting for my second little girl to be born in a week.I am sure the same things will happen with my new one.

When I had my first child, I read the book Baby Wise. It helped me get her on a schedule. I had to wake my daughter up in the middle of the night because she had eating problems where she was not getting enough. By four weeks, I was able to stop doing that and had her sleeping through the night using the Baby Wise book as a reference. I hate reading, but it helped a lot.  Good luck.

Also, what about burping her? She falls asleep while I am breastfeeding. She doesn't burp.. how do I burp her? Sometimes I can do it and other times I just can't. Do I just let her sleep without being burped?

Oh goodness thanks for all the responses, my baby is a week old and in the hospital they made me wake her up every 2 hours to feed her. Thats what I have kept doing. But I'm just going to let her sleep when she wants then and let her wake up on her own.

They would make me wake my baby up for feeding in the hospital if it had been over 4 hours. :/ I hated it. I'm like if she's starving shell wake up lol

She will sleep when she wants...do not wake her for feedings.

I dont want to scare you but sids(crib death) is mainly caused by sleep being interrupted. Let her sleep when and how much sge wants.
Once she is about 3-4months then let her only have 2 naps a day for an hour or so. Sids (crib death) is less risk once tgey are 3months....

We obviously can't force a baby to sleep just go with the flow and rest when she sleeps little by little you'll get into a schedule. And also babies go through growth spurts where they can be fussier, awake more,or sleeping a lot it varies .

The number one mistake ftm do is they wake up there baby for feedings. Not to do! I dont know if you do or not but if yes, let baby sleep. They will wake up when they need something. A lot of people will say to keep baby on schedule which is true but baby will adjust and make a feeding schedule around her sleep patterns. What makes u say your baby doesnt sleep enough? Do u feel like shes up more often then she sleeps? Most newborn sleep a lot then start to be more awake. How old is ur little one? Its hard to tell but maybe ur baby doesnt need as much sleep as u thought. Most of the time if u nap while ur baby sleep ull realise they get lots of sleep its just power naps though.
