I started amy on baby food a day before she turned 5 months... we started with butternut squash, then carrots, the avocado, we are now on yellow squash, she has loved everything, and tries to grab the spoon and put it in her mouth herself, next we will be doing sweet potato, then green beans and peas... then continue to fruits :D she is doing great and growing a million miles a day... time is flying bye... she already holds herself up while sitting with no hand support, but is yet to roll over.. she stands with support and is always happy :D

Just an update to my original post...we've been on baby food for about 2 1/2 months now & the twins pretty much expect it after their bottle. We've weeded out what they like and don't like. Both LOVE pears, green beans, and carrots, but not so wild about squash & peaches. We've moved on to the stage 2 foods now and are trying them on the multiple ingredient flavors like sweet potato w/ turkey (looks gross, but they love it), oatmeal and fruit, etc.

Carly tries to feed herself all the time. I have to block her hands from mine because if she sees the spoon, she grabs at it and will fling food on herself, me, and whatever else is in the way!

Ella is 4 and a bit months and we haven't started at all yet.  My doc told me to try and wait till 6 months so I am going to wait as long as possible.  She is having bottle top ups

We are still just "tasting" the menu as Annabelle isn't quite 5 months.  She loves bananas and sweet potatoes. I added a little organic oatmeal to the banana as she doesn't like the oatmeal alone. She blew bubbles and spit carrots all over me, the floor, herself... laughing all the while so we're done with that for now. She had zucchini this week and did okay. Started applesauce tasting today but she wasn't interested in eating. Will try again. Next on the menu-- pear, avocado, mango, and peas... not together, of course! She doesn't always want to eat or taste so we don't push it at this point. If she shows interest, we taste. If not, we don't.

She sat in her bumbo the first few times just because she doesn't wobble, but now she sits in her high chair. Still a bit wobbly but we want her to get use to the chair at the table when we eat.

Seems as though rice cereal was a bust. He ate peas a couple days in a row, which seemed to work okay for him.  Then we moved onto squash and he loved it so much he was literally diving for the spoon!  Too funny.

Happy five months!!!

Brandi we have a highchair like that too but it can be a stand alone or it can be attached to a chair. What a neat invention :)

My little one is five months old today and we decided to try giving him some rice cereal.  While he certainly didn't reject it, he wasn't quite sure what to do with it once it was in his mouth, so most ended up on his chin and bib.  I think it was a good start, though!  We'll keep practicing. :)

I have the fisher-price space saver high chairs that strap to a dining room chair & go from newborn all the way to toddler (the seat reclines for newborns, sits up for bigger infants, and the back comes off as a booster chair for toddlers). It works best for me with have twins & it's a huge space saver! I have the bumbos, but never actually thought about using them to feed.

Lil_lady:

What kind of oatmeal are they talking about?  Baby oatmeal is just the same granual size and thickness depends upon how much liquid is mixed into it. I use breastmilk and make it VERY liquidy. I could see why adding rice cereal would help for her maybe some extra calories :) great idea too for when they have a cold!

My OB said that if I were to give our girls any solid foods that she would only recommend rice cereal at this age. She thinks the oatmeal is too thick and it makes some babies choke on it. We have been giving Madison rice cereal for over a month because she was spitting up while she had a cold and it helped coat her stomach. It's become a habit and she gets it everyday now. The extra calories help too because she's only 11 pds and 5 months old! They aren't concerned though as you have to remember that she was only 2.11 lbs when I had her.

We use the Bumbo seat while we feed the girls but don't leave them in for too long. They seem to wiggle a lot more in their highchair which causes one heck of a mess.

I will be using a high chair too... but not till next week when i am in miami... I will ask doctor next week if she thinks Amy is ready, to start on cereal, not sure if I will use it or not, I think she is ready she already makes chewing motions when she watches us eat. and she coos at my food lol.. its entertaining. I gave her watermelon, and tomato to chew on already and she loved it. we will see...

The bumbo delays ability to sit up on their own unassisted, also it is bad for their hips. I use a highhair.

Also I don't know why in the US rice cereal is common as a first food but it is constipating and there is no nutritional benefit to it. If you want to do cereal first though it isn't necessary, oatmeal or brown rice cereals are much more nutritional. Obviously rice cereal is fine it won't harm but it has no vitamins or minerals.

Which seat are you all using to feed your babies?  I'm getting ready to start my little guy on some rice cereal soon and am contemplating a Bumbo but know there are always controversies over it...

Majikat they don't recommend starting solids until six months in the US either but cereals are deemed ok starting at four but prefered to wait until six months or when baby can sit up unassisted.. Any foods other than breastmilk or formula prior to the age of four months increases risk of diabetes and obesity. Actually formula also increases risk of obesity too I just read in a medical journal.

In canada you are not supposed to feed your baby until 6 months but with my other 2 it was still four months.... I started feeding him a couple days ago he has had bananas, rice cereal, and sweet potato.... I really think he needed to start eating! he is a giant... he is a 20 pounds at 3 months 3 weeks

We aren't getting the go ahead until at least 6 months :(  Dr usually starts at 4 months so even though she is catching up in many ways she is still behind in others.  I am too scared to use orajel because of the swallowing warnings.  We have enough trouble with breathing and setting the monitor off lol!

Our girls have also been eating solid food for a little while but it's usually only a few times a week. Taylor loves everything and Madison is the picky eater. She only likes carrots. We have given them smashed banana, applesauce, sweet potatos, carrots and peas. I dont blame them for not liking the peas, they smell funny and taste weird, and I like peas!
