I've got 'Your Baby's First Year: Week by week'. I would NEVER recommend it to anyone. I thought it would be good because I have 'Your pregnancy week by week' which was great and really factual. E.g. Baby should cry-it-out, start solids at 4 months or they'd never learn to eat on their own, and even instructs that at 5 months it is a good time to wean baby from the breast to formula. The milestones are totally off, Medina should be crawling by now and doing so many amazing things. It even says baby swings are neglect-o-matics (in an indirect manner), it's just an anti-love book.
I've never started whole milk til right at one year, then I do it gradually (over about a week) mixing formula and whole milk until its all milk.
Yeah, I have the same book and read what it had to say about sippy cups as well. And you are right, it says the time to start with a cup is now, but a normal cup before a sippy. I had never heard that before, but that's what it recommends. I have tried Cash with a normal cup as well as a sippy. He will hold the sippy but can't tip it back far enough to get anything out. If I hold the sippy he will drink from it, but seems confused and most of it runs out of his mouth. When I tried a cup, he got soaked - bless his heart - but managed to get a little in. Keep trying is all I know to do.
Thanks for the input about finger foods. I'm going to ask my pedi as well.
jenkaye - I want to take Cash off the bottle at 10 months as well. Still on formula, but not out of a bottle. Do you transition in some whole milk at that point as well?
I know I say this alot, but I LOVE having you guys to chat with!!!
I have that book too and that is why I was wondering when people start those bc we were thinking of starting it soon bc Joel is very intersted in our cups or anything we are holding.
sippy cups I heard that are for around 7-9 months but every baby is different, first they need to be able to hold the cup between their hands well. I think.
zazou- I think that is what they were saying to do in the book...if I read it correctly. Everytime I hold a big Cotler starts hitting it and it makes it hard to read :)
Hey guys! I just got out my "What to Expect The First Year" book. There is a very interesting section in the fifth month about sippy cups. Anyone else have the book? Tell me what your thoughts on it.....
WIth finger foods, it's usually around 9 months or usually your baby indicates that it's ready.
Wth the sippy cup, Medina has been drinking water every now and then from it. Most babies are usually ready between 7 - 9 months of age. I'm going to get Medina to play with an empty one, I read that it helps babies to accept it more. Or what is recommended is a little bittle of breast milk or formula in there.
Every baby is different, Medina wants to drinbk from a normal glass just like her parents, lol, very cute ................
Ok, this is just from my memory....I usually start the "teething" toast or hard crackers (forget what its called) once the first couple teeth come in.
Finger foods, like diced peaches, peas, soft cereal, etc. I think I've started around 8-9 months?? I think that it's around this age that they can actually pick up something small like that between their fingers.
Sippy cups I usually try to start around 10-11 months, because I do take my babies off the bottle right at age one.
I got Colter a sippy cup for 4+ months a while ago because I read that it promotes healthy drinking habits. The first time was a disaster and now I add just about a couple drops of apple juice and he loves it. He takes it fine with just water as well lately. Has lots of trouble with it but he gets some down. I am also ordering the plastic bibs from Bumpkin cause he soaks through all his bibs.
As far as finger food what I do know is that the first kinds they get is the Puffs. Not sure when exactley that is but they dissolve in their mouths.
I have started giving JT somea little bit of water in a sippy cup last week. He isn't really holding it up himself and doesn't really suck anything out of it.
I am going to ask JT's pediatrician about the finger foods.
I was wondering the same thing and when do you start a sippy cup?
I had the exact same question.
