I use the nipple shield and its a godsend!! I used them with my first too!! No soreness...to me they are amazing!
and make sure you are expressing a bead of milk before latching baby on as it takes 10 or more seconds for the brain to recognize baby is gonna eat and that 10 seconds or so waiting for the let down can be painful if your letting baby suck first.... also the latch is absolutely key... im having troubles sometimes as well with that and man i sure can tell when shes not on right... fricken hurts!!! and sometimes it takes a few goes before i can get her to open wide enough....
Thanks for the advice ladies! I do remember hearing about the milk technique but it slipped my mind with the 5 thousand other things I've learned. Hopefully it helps soon!
Oh my goodness. J am in the exact same boat as you. They HURT! I have been finding out that the proper latch on is the key and I've been doing it all wrong. Find a book or pamphlet or movie that helps explain the proper latch on. It is starting to help me. Unfortunately once they get sore its very difficult to get them healthy again. The breast milk air drying on the nipple does help. Do that often too.
Also if you have a wic office in your area you can probably call them and just have a consult with the lactation consultants. They are totally awesome to work with and so so helpful. I know where I live that they will actually come to my home and help with latch and what not. Good luck to you but yes I have heard that rubbing breast milk on them after feeding is really helpful.
The nurses in the hospital that I.am.in told me that you.can manually express a little more milk after you are finished feeding and rub that on your nipples. Apparently it can help.
