lactating?

I will be 34 weeks on Sunday...shouldn't I be lactating by now? Just concerned cause I have a friend five weeks behind me who is already leaking and I was not able to produce enough to feed my first child

I didn't leak at all first pregnancy and successfully breastfed until she was 1. I'm 34 weeks pregnant with baby number two and can just about  get a drop of colostrum if I try to hand express. It doesn't bare any relevance as to whether you'll be successful or not. If you really want to breastfeed you will succeed. :)

I just reread my post and what i ment by bringing it up to your Dr was the concern that you had troubles with you last pregnancy...not that its something bad that your not leaking yet... i hope it made sense?

I successfully breastfed 2 babies with no issues and never leaked at all during pregnancy.  I am 36 and 3 with this pregnancy and am not leaking with this one either.

The milk supply itself doesnt come in till 30-40 hours after birth, but tipically woman dont feel the sensation of fullness of milk till about 2-3 following... so there isnt really any way of knowing what the milk supply will be like till following... the leaking right now is you body producing colostrum and not every woman can express this either till delivery.... and i should add that even if a woman can express really early on in their pregnancy doesnt mean their milk supply is going to have a lot... its all based on hormones and every woman can be different.... its definitely something to bring up to your Dr and i would request to talk with the lactation consultant after delivery to see whats the best way to get a good supply... congrats on your pregnancy! good luck!

I think the real flow doesn't come in until after the baby is born. I could be wrong though, as it may just vary with women. As for myself, I'm only 32 weeks in, and if I see any milky business, its only because I squeezed myself a little hard. Its so clear though, that you could easily not notice it yet. I never was good at the breastfeeding thing, as I dried up within a day of having my first kid, but I'm sure the no show so far isn't a bad omen.
