Should I take a pregnancy test even though I'm spotting?

I've been trying to get pregnant in the last two months. My periods are usually extremely heavy so I assume based on my period that I'm not pregnant, but this period has been drastically different. Only spotting really. Should I take a pregnancy test since my period is drastically different? I know you can be pregnant and still bleed, so should I take a test, or visit a doctor? What do you think?
