Definition: After ovulation, the portion of the follicle that is left is called the corpus luteum (latin for white body). The corpus luteum makes progesterone which supports the uterine lining and, if conception occurs, the early pregnancy until the placenta can take over progesterone production. If conception does not occur, the corpus luteum quits making progesterone, the uterine lining sheds and menstruation occurs.
