Can HCg detect Twins?

I went to the ER the other night and the DR told me that I am approximately 4 weeks pregnant and that my hcg levels are 4300. Is this normal for 5 weeks gestation?

Yes higher than normal HCG levels are the first determining factor when having multiples, but like AnnieBrooke said the range is so wide at this stage.  I would have your doctor monitor your HCG levels if you are concerned.

Another sign is 'extreme" pregnancy symptoms, like excessive fatigue, morning sickness, or even weigh gain. I miscarried twins about four weeks ago at 9 week gestation. I knew all along that it was twins, I just had a "gut feeling" and I was right, but neither of them had heartbeats.

The range of "normal" in hCG readings is really, really wide.  I don't have the chart in front of me, but I remember being amused to see the thousands of numbers that would be considered a normal reading within a given week of pregnancy.  The only thing that clued me to the possibility of multiples the two times I had twins was that the levels rose really fast, more than doubling and at times tripling in two days.  But I don't even know if that is definitive.

ps -- One lady on this site mentioned that when she was pregs with twins, her first reading (at about 4 weeks) was 70.
