Could the doctor be wrong?

Okay, so this will probably be as confusing to all of you as it is to me, but hopefully someone will understand and be able to offer some advice or knowledge from a similar experience.

I am currently 10 weeks pregnant.
I had my first prenatal appointment this past Monday, March 9, 2009.
Everything went great until I did my ultrasound.
The ultrasound technician only spent a total of about 5 minutes on my ultrasound, less than one minute which was devoted to trying to find my baby's heartbeat. She spent less than a minute then quit doing the ultrasound, the heartbeat wasn't detected. Two of my friends are currently pregnant as well, one of which took 30 minutes to find her baby's heartbeat and the other just said it took them a while to find hers.

I was told that my pregnancy may not be viable.

That night, March 9, 2009, I am 99.9% positive that I felt the baby flutter. It was in my uterus on the left side. Kinda felt like a fish was going back and forth (from top to bottom) creating waves that almost felt like they had a gentle vibration to them. I felt this for 10-20 seconds, but then I moved and could not feel it any longer.

The following morning, March 10, 2009, I woke up extremely hot. I felt like it was 80 degrees when it was only 55 degrees. I could not cool down for anything. Also, I had really bad nausea, a headache that lasted two days (until March 11, 2009), was moody, and exhausted from doing nothing. That evening I cooled down, but would freeze and couldn't get warm for anything. I usually go through this when my hormones rise. One of my, also pregnant, friends goes through the same thing, except she is 5 months along.

Then on March 11, 2009, I had more blood work done. Still had all my normal symptoms.

Today, March 12, 2009, I had a recheck with the doctor and he proceeded to tell me that my hcg levels have dropped "a little bit" and that the pregnancy isn't viable. I told him about how I had felt the baby flutters and how I was certain my hormones had risen due to the symptoms. Then I requested a new ultrasound be done with someone different, for a second opinion. I go on March 17, 2009 to have the new ultrasound done.

**I still have all my symptoms, they actually progress as time goes on. I saw the baby in the ultrasound (my first one on March 9th) and everything looked normal the baby definitely was following schedule. I was 9 weeks and 4 days on march 9th. I have had NO symptoms of miscarriage. None at all!!**

So my question is:

Does anyone know what could be going on? The doctor says non-viable pregnancy, but I felt the flutters and have no symptoms of a miscarriage. Also, does it mean 100% that if your hormones drop "a little bit" (exact words of the doctor) that you will have a miscarriage? Nothing makes sense to me and Tuesday is so far away!! Please help!!

I was reading through your post and I understand how you feel.  I am currently going through the same thing and was just told that same thing by my doctor.  I truly don't know how to react to this news and I have been reading up on as many things related to this topic as I can.  I have never had this happen before and I am a little perplexed!  I too have no symptoms of a miscarriage (bleeding, cramping, etc.) but according to my doctor the baby has not grown like it is supposed to therefore he doesn't expect that pregnancy to be successful.  He said I could wait and let nature take its course or come in for a D & C.  I am choosing to wait and see what happens.  I wish you good luck with everything.

I agree with everyone else...you need to get a second opinion.  I can't belive they only spent that little amount of time looking for a heartbeat.  Was this US abdominal or transvaginal??  My OB is still doing them transvaginal to get a better look.  Have you though about maybe going to a new OB??  Maybe to one of your friends OBs??  I had to switch this time because of how I felt with her, even though she has been with me through 5 other miscarriages.  Sorry about what you are going through...waiting is the worst...but try to not stress, I know its hard!!

No, I have had no bleeding what so ever. As for cramps, I have them, but I know 100 percent that it is tied to the constipation and gas. I have no other signs of a miscarriage.

They did not try the doppler. They said they do not try it until  the 12th week.

I had them set my appointment for my next ultrasound up with someone else. So now I will be going through the hospital to have it done instead of the clinic. My friend, whom is also pregnant, goes through the same hospital for her ultrasounds and she says they are very thorough. They will not stop an ultrasound without being 100 percent positive of what's going on. She also said that they usually have an obgyn participate in the ultrasound process.

Everyone that knows me tells me that everything is going to be okay. But there is always that thought, the one I can not push away!!

I would definitely get another opinion. Why did they only spend 5 minutes doing the u/s? That's kinda crazy! Also, HCG levels reach a peak and slowly start coming back down once you near the 2nd trimester. So I would not assume anything off of that since you are nearing the 2nd trimester. And you say you are still having symptoms, so that is a good sign. When I had one of my m/c's I had no symptoms whatsoever and my levels were always on the low end of the scale. They should have spent more time with you regarding the u/s to confirm everything. If it were me, I would go to someone else and see what they say. Did they try to listen to the heartbeat yet with a doppler? In some cases it is too early, but I think they usually at least try by now. I wouldn't assume you are miscarrying....you haven't had any spotting, cramping, or anything unusual, have you?

Well, being 10 weeks (I don't know if it's your first or not) I don't know if it was the baby moving, or something else. I thought for SURE I was feeling the baby move at that time, but when I actually did start feeling him move (14-15W) it definitely was not the baby. As for having symptoms, after losing a baby (if you are, not saying you are) symptoms will last until the baby is out, and your body goes back to normal (including the hot/cold flashes) As for the ultrasound, definitely needs more than 5 minutes to check for everything, especially viability. As far as the hb goes, it took my ultrasound tech to find my baby's heartbeat like 3 minutes because we have really good equipment, maybe your ultrasound tech doesn't, but either way, she didn't spend enough time finding it. Hormones fluxuate, and go down but not usually that early on, but definitely go to the next ultrasound, and if the baby's growing, then wait it out! I hope everything works out for you, keep us updated!

My mother went thruogh the exact same thing. The doc told her that there was no heart beat and tried to give her some pills to make her "naturally" miscarry her child and start her period again. But she knew he was wrong and just waited a couple of weeks, then went to another doctor. Im glad she never took those pills cause if she did then I woudnt be here right now. Always get another opinion.
