Dangers of no amniotic fluid

My water broke at 14 weeks.  The baby is growing and has a strong heart beat.  The doctors seem concerned about disabilities if the baby survives.  I would like to know what are some of the potential disabilities and what are the chances of my baby surviving?

Cheralyn- I wouldn't give up hope. First, measuring amniotic fluid is NOT easy to do and can be off. So there may be plenty of fluid for your little one. Because it is constantly moving and replenishing itself it could be enough until you're far enough along for the amnioinfusion.

Personally I would put myself on limited bed rest (keep feet elevated but do remember to massage your legs and get circulation going) and just hydrate constantly until the doctors were able to do something. Another thing- always, always get a second opinion. Another doctor may be more willing to do something to help you than another doctor.

You need to hydrate hydrate hydrate, did i mention hydrate???  That way you can make up the fluid you have lost.  And I also agree about an amnio infusion, but thats not done I believe until u are further along.  Good luck to u.

All I was told is there is nothing they can do at this time but wait and see what happens because I am so early.  They put me on amoxicillin and set me on my way.
Thank you for answering.  It really helps.

I can tell you from experience that some issuse with low/no amniotic fluid can be fetal heart distress, lung immaturity, digestive system immaturity, low birth weight and breech presentation.

Are your doctors performing amnioinfusion?  If your body is not producing a consistent amount of fluid to replenish itself there is a very slim chance of survival being so early in your pregnancy.

Honestly, the odds are very low of survival. The baby needs fluid for the lungs to mature and for the limbs to grow. Without it they become twisted and don't grow as they should. I'm so sorry that you have to be going through this, and I wish you all the luck. Have your doctors talked about sealing the bag and doing a fluid transfer?
