Down Syndrome.

Hey ladies I just got the ultra sound that measures the neck.  We were told that our baby is extremely high risk for Downs and offered us abortion and said that we needed to see a specialist right away. We asked our family and friends and they said the test was bogus and they were told that too and their babies are "normal". Any thoughts  on it???

Get a second or third opinion!! I have heard people getting the same news and their child end up bein perfectly fine. Don't make any quick decisions. Just breathe and go talk to another specialist. Xoxo

They measure the fluid in the neck because babies with Downs Syndrome have way more fluid than babies without Downs. They also look for the presence of a nasal bone. Also during the short period of time to have the NT scan performed, babies with Downs do not have a nasal bone present. The test results are a risk category. Either low risk with no further testing needed. Or high risk with further testing needed.

when I was pregnant my baby had a calcium deposit in her heart and they didn't find a part of the fiber connecting the left and right side of the brain. they said that she was likely to have down syndrome or chromosomal abnormalities. they offered me a blood test or amniocentesis and an abortion. even though I was 26 weeks.
I took the amniocenticis, even though I knew I wasn't getting an abortion- I just wanted to be mentally ready if she had something abnormal.
all of the results came back negative and I have birth to a very healthy baby and she's an amazing 2 week old today :)

Since you already know you don't want an abortion,  further testing is probably not necessarily.

I was "pregnant with" a friend who had a Downs syndrome baby the day after I had my son.

And look at that kid go.  He's a fabulous young man.

Blessings for you,  and your family,  rachkosar.

I know a lot of women that opt out of taking the test because they know it's not 100% accurate

We also had the blood test. We already turned down the abortion. They told us with the blood test 90% chance.
We dont care one way or another. Shes our princess. I was just curious if anyone else had been told that and what they thought about it.

They had me do a blood test. The test results come back with a percentage chance that your child will have downs syndrome. Ask for the blood test. I can't figure out how measuring the neck makes them believe that the baby will have downs. You can always get a second doctor's opinion. Those would be the two things I would do.

Well,  I certainly wouldn't have an abortion on the word that your baby is at "extremely high risk" for having Downs.

It sounds like they found a thickened nuchal fold on the baby's neck?

You have some decisions to make.  If you know for sure you won't abort even if your baby has Down's,  putting the baby at risk with an amnio would be pointless.

If you are considering abortion,  you certainly need more information than an assessment of "extremely high risk".

This is hard.

They told that to my Mom too. Which caused her major depression and baby room be premie but it wasn't true my sister is a very healthy and smart 10 year old. They also offered abortion to my mom but obviously that was out of the question even if baby would have had down syndrome. My mom never would have gone through that. I personally wouldn't believe doctors and never would I abort my baby even if they told me that. I wouldn't even get an amniocentesis if they were to offer. I see it so wrong for doctors to offer that just because they think baby may not come out normal it's completely wrong and I'm so against that. But like I said a lot of people get told that and they have completely healthy babies""""!!

I'm not sure how the measuring of the neck can determine if your baby may have down syndrome. The only way I know of is by taking some amniotic fluid and test that. I would really look into the doctors procedures before making any major decisions.

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest.
my friend was told the same thing, and her daughter is fine and nothing is wrong with her at all.
she was a 75% chance of having it.
