Just went to our first u/s and we had figured my wife was 7 weeks but gestational sac only measured 4 and a half weeeks

My wife and I went to our first u/s and we had it pegged that she was at 7 weeks. The doctor showed us that the gestational sac was only 4 and a half weeks. There was also a more then normal amount of blood in her uterus. After the birth of our first child we found out that she had endometriosis. Our doctor has sent her for horomone testing, but thats not for another couple of days. We have prepared ourselves for the worst but our hoping for the best. Can anyone give any insight on our situation.

While it IS best to prepare for the worst, there is still hope.  For some women implantation doesn't occur in the "normal" time frame.  Some women don't have implantation occur until around the time of their expected AF.  Thus it would put your ACTUAL dates (by size) off.  When I became pregnant this last time I thought I would be around 6-7 weeks based on dates, but a first ultrasound showed the sac at 5 wks 3 days ....a repeat ultrasound 3 weeks later showed a healthy heartbeat ...he's now almost 11 months old.  I wish you the best, please keep us updated.

Thank you everyone for your input.  My LMP was April 22.  We have been planning on a new baby so remembering the dates was important to me.  When we went to the doctor I was suppose to be 7 1/2 weeks based on my LMP, when they did the ultrasound it showed I was just under 5 weeks which was the first thing that raised an eyebrow.  Then as she was looking around checking the size of the gestational sac she noticed a rather large pouch of blood.  She said that sometimes they see these early in the pregnancy, but mine was larger than normal.  I have not had any bleeding or spoting which they found to be unusual too because of the size of the blood pouch.  They said that there is a slight chance that my conception date is later than expected and that would explain why I am only measuring about 5wks.  Of course there was no heartbeat, I didnt even see anything in the sac...it looked empty to me.  And I am almost done with nursing school (I actually graduate on the 24th of this month) and as soon as I saw the picture I thought something was wrong.  Now granted i am not a nurse yet and have no prenatal experience.  I do have a little in Labor and Delivery and I have had a child before.  I just knew something wasnt right.  Then the doctor comes in and of course explains things and says that there is a slight chance that this is a viable pregnancy, but then gave me the whole speel about miscarriages...what to expect and what to do when it happens.  He talked like I was definately going to miscarry.  Of course we are devastated and cannot except that this is it.  We are hoping for the best and welcome anything that anybody knows about this.  Thank you again!!

I'm sorry you're going through this. It can be torturous wondering what's going to happen (I have been in this position, different scenario). Please update us or come back for support!

If you are certain about the date she's been pregnant or her last menstrual period (LMP) that it's not a good indicator that the baby is measuring behind....but it's questionable if you don't know the exact date of  ovulation.   How was the baby's hearbeat?   Was it high?   A high heartbeat is a good indicator that pregnancy will continue, but if's in 90s or low 100s I'd be a bit concerned.   Of course there probably wouldn't be a heart beat if she's truly 4 1/2 weeks.  Right now it's questionable if you're not sure of the LMP and you just have to wait it out and see what happens.

have them check her hcg levels when i had my miscarriage they checked mine every other day. That is all you can do is not get your hopes up and what happens happens for a reason.  Even if you can't understand what that reason is.  I had a blighted ovum waited the 3 months of recovery after my miscarriage and within 2 months i was pregnant again and everything is fine and healthy.
