I've just been for my ultrasound, im 13w4d and she noticed that I have low amniotic fluid... im really scared, I dont know what it means.. I've read up about it on the Internet which is just making me even more scared! I'm seeing my doctor in half an hour, but has anyone else had this? What happened? Please hope for the best.

Unfortunately my baby has a very rare disorder where the whole pelvic region hasn't developed,  no kidneys, no bladder,  no sacrum and only one leg.. tomorrow I will be going into hospital to have a curette done at 14weeks5days to terminate my first pregnancy. Its nothing I have or haven't done, just one of those freaks of nature.. We got some photos of our baby's face to take home today.. he/she would of been gorgeous... so devastated :(

Thanks @ady_f ~ thats horrible your friend had to go through that... I honestly don't think I could carry a baby to full term knowing that it won't survive... it would break your heart, more than anything else. Im still trying to keep my hopes up, I guess you never know what miracle could happen these days.

i am so sorry you have to go through all of this. I have an acquantince who had low amniotic fluid, wasnt able to really see the baby or the gender, which was at around 12 weeks, they told her that it was possible she wouldnt carry to full term, by 16 weeks they gave her a diagnosis, i dont remember exacrly at this moment what it was they told her but its a condition where usually the baby doesnt survive past the 2nd trimester, she actually carried full term but the baby isnt going to survive... i pray this isnt something anyone would ever have to go through, it wasnt an answer to scare you but just an experience sort of thing. Still i wish you the best, dont stress to much since its bad for the baby, i know its hard not to stress with what youre going through ....prayers your way!

Update : I went and saw my obstetrician tonight and he said he didnt know what exactly was wrong, just that there were abnormalities that need to be investigated further. He's referring me to a fetal diagnostic unit in the city for further testing. Unfortunately I was made aware that the process to finally get answers will take 4+ weeks :(

Im so sorry for your loss @merelynnino ~ thanks for your support!
@DADAT47 ~ I am classed as probably morbidly obese - I was 100kg when I fell pregnant ~ was actually on a weight loss journey beforehand, but regardless will finish it after what ever happens. When I had the transvaginal scan, the baby was head down, legs up if you know what I mean, and the last time I went, when they told me about the low amniotic fluid,  he/she was laying in the fetal like position,  curled up in a ball. I'm presuming my doctor will send me back for another scan.. its just really scary not knowing.

Do mind if I ask your body type? Thin...obese? I only ask because obesity, especially morbid obesity, can make a scan very difficult. The resolution of the imaging is compromised. I'm thinking at your gestational age a transvaginal scan may be clearer. The legs are formed at your gestational age and should be seen. When I do a scan at about 13 weeks, I am required to document all 4 extremities.

I was detected with low amniotic fluid at 13 weeks they could hardly see the baby by 16 weeks my baby was without fluid and had a heartbeat i went to the specialist where i got the blue dye test but i failed and then i was told i had gotten infection in my uterus and they said that in time it could be bad for me that it was best that i induced my labor so by 19 weeks i had to terminate my pregnancy do to infection i had a baby girl who i will forever have in my heart goodluck to u momma always believe in miracles

Thanks for your response ~ I did have a read up about it, it sounds horrible,  but I can't help but see the resemblance between it and what I've been told.. so far I've had 3 abdominal ultrasounds and one internal... all 4 they haven't seen kidneys or a bladder or one of the baby's legs. Mind you, every time I've been its been in a really bad spot for the technician to see anything properly. See my obstetrician tomorrow night... can not come quick enough!

@Elouise, I can't say for sure it is renal agenesis, but that was my thought when I first read your post. The info you provide seems to fit that diagnosis. Bilateral Renal agenesis means both kidneys did not form. If there was one kidney, the fluid would be normal. Proper amounts of fluid are needed for proper lung development. Chronically low fluid leads to pulmonary hypoplasia which is underdeveloped lungs. Sorry, it cannot reverse itself. Only other diagnosis which I can think of is that your membranes ruptured and the fluid leaked out. Seeing the kidneys at 14 weeks with transabdominal ultrasound is difficult. The bladder can usually be seen though. The specialist should know how to look for renal arteries which supply blood to the kidneys. Seeng the arteries can prove kidneys formed. Renal agenesis is not that common and it is nothing you did. I'll be hoping for you.

Thanks ladies ~ I've been drinking heaps of water and just resting since I found out.. haven't been sent for a follow up ultrasound yet, so hopefully can get some answers soon and everything will have returned to normal. @DADAT47 ~ can renal agenesis fix itself?

Sorry to hear. I have seen this. Fluid is black on ultrasound and if it appears the baby is "squished" on the image and no black spaces around it that is called oligohydranniios. Probably renal agenesis because the fetal kidneys start producing fluid in the 2nd trimeste. Hopes and prayers for you.

stay positive. 34+1 and at 33 weeks I was told my baby was in the 10th percentile (10-90 is normal, so she's small) and my amniotic fluid levels were low. I kept well hydrated and ate properly and I came back a week later and it looks like the fluid doubled.
god doesn't give you a baby for no reason. prayers your way mama. don't ever talk down or think negative. tell yourself your baby will be healthy!
