Oratane

I need some urgent advice please: I took oratane for my skin and two weeks after my course stoped I got pregnant, I read that it could have serious side effects on pregnancies and that it could cause birth defects. I'm six weeks pregnant now and don't know what to do!! What's the chances that something may be wrong with my baby as they say you shouldn't get pregnant at least a month after you stopped the medication??

hey Lize, as someone that went through the same thing I wish you all the luck. I also got alot of negative advise from everyone, even my doctor, but I decided that I want my baby and I've put all my trust in God. I still worried everyday and wondered if I made the right decision as specially as my due date came nearer. She was born a healthy baby without any abnormality, she is 6months and a week old today and she is the sweetest healthy little girl.
all the best to you and you baby!  regards lize19

Hi, my name is Lize I'm exactly in the same situation, I'm five weeks pregnant and was on orataine for two weeks and two weeks after I stopped using orataine I found out that I'm pregnant. There is a lot of negative people, and they want me to terminate. I have decided not to but I'm sad every single day and scared to death, please if anyone has some advice on things I can do to make sure my baby will be ok. God bless you all!

Hey, my little girl is born on 6 jan and I'm very pleased to be telling you that she is healthy and there is nothing wrong.
I got pregnant 2weeks after I stoped the medicine, I went to my doctor and he told me to stop worrying and not to go for a abortion, he said that they just say a month to be really cautious and that he was sure that the medicine was already out of my system. He told me that he can't gaurantee that something  won't be wrong but that if there is something wrong it would be something small like cleft lip or worst down syndrom.
With my sonars he checked the development each month and said that she was developing right and nothing fisically looked wrong.I also did a tripple test that came back negative.
I still worried right through my pregnancy and prayed everyday for her to be healthy, today I'm really glad I took the chance and didn't get a termination.
At the end its  you and your wife's desicion, I wish you all the best.
Please keep in touch.

I suggest you seek advice from your doctor who subscribed you the drug. I am currently in the same situation however i was still taking Oratane up until 2days ago when I found out I was pregnant. i believe I am 4wks at the most today and have made to see my dermitologist doctor on monday. As warnings is evident above...the drug can cause serious birth defects so i would seek advice asap.
I'll be interested to know what advice you get. But I will post up what I get told after my appt. good luck.

Hi...I am currently in the same situation and I'm losing my mind. I am so scared. I would just like to know if your baby is fine and there weren't any birth defects. Thank you.

Here is from the Oratane website.  It sounds like you need to talk to your doctor to find out how seriously they mean it when they say "within one month of stopping taking your Orotane."  If they mean four and a half weeks, the doctor will have to find out exactly what the odds are that you have a problem.  If they mean "we say one month because we want people to be really cautious, but we simply want it out of your bloodstream," that is a different story.  Your doctor might need to contact the Oratane people for more exact and specific information.

From the website:
____

"The medication in Oratane, isotretinoin, is teratogenic. This means that it can cause birth defects, that is, the unborn child can become deformed.  Birth defects can only be caused by Oratane if you use Oratane while you are pregnant, become pregnant while you are using Oratane or become pregnant within one month of stopping taking your Oratane.  Should you become pregnant while taking Oratane or within one month after the end of your Oratane treatment you will need to discuss the action that may need to be taken with your doctor. This is a very serious situation."

I couldn't find any statistics online regarding how many women who became pregnant after taking Oratane had children with birth defects. You should make an appointment with an Obstetrician as soon as possible and inform him/her of the issue. A doctor will know more about what specific birth defects are of concern and whether or not there are any tests that can be run to test for them.
