Stupid Question: Do most people have to pay for circumcision?

I just read a post about paying $600+ for circumcision...and then it dawned on me...do people have to pay for it?!!

I had always assumed that it would be covered by insurance.  I can and will call my ins. sometime...but I hate to wait on hold and I wont have time to do it for like a week...Just curious if people could share if they paid or if it was covered...I know it might be different from carrier to carrier ...I'm just looking for a general consensus =)

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure its considered a voluntary procedure, meaning a lot of insurances won't cover it because its not medically necessary.

Which it really isn't
Its more for looks than anything in this day and age.

So I know this post is extremely old... But still curious on it? Will medicaid cover it and do it at the hospital? And is it a must to do it?

Medicaid will not cover it. If you elect to have it done you will have to pay for it out of pocket.
Is it a must to have it done? Or will the babies be okay without having it done? This is my first boy and I've heard some stories from some and I just have thought about it alot since I found out were having a boy..
Circumcision is not medically necessary in this day and age.
It is more for looks than anything.
Its not any Harder to clean. Just teach your boy how to bathe well.

I know medicaid in the USA does not cover it anymore. They used to. Not now. It cost $250 to have it done. I live in florida. Private insurance may be different.

My Uncle (the mohel, I am Jewish) did do the bris for Jaxson. He obviously wouldn't take any $$ from me.. I am not sure his typical fee, but I think in terms of insurance, he bills the client and the client submits it to their insurance carrier to try and get reimbursed.

In Minnesota they changed the "law" it is not cosmetic surgery. I had to sign a paper saying how much the circum. cost and that the insurance may not cover it.

My doctor didn't take insurance and it cost me $600 for my son's circumcision.  My ob did my son's circumcision.  I'm not sure how it works at other hospitals.  But I think if they take the insurance, it's covered under that.  I was in shock as well, I thought it was included but just like everything, even that had a price.

I have blue cross blue shield and they cover a lot...even a private room for labor, delivery and recovery.  I called up and asked about my benefits and they basically said that anything a doctor deemed necessary and did, and billed for, they'd pay...I didn't even think about asking about circumcision though!  I'm glad to hear that most people with insurance had it covered =)  I'll double check though...but I'm pretty sure it will be!

i think  most insurance companies will cover it as part of neonatal care. i  know mine does  and i have harvard  pilgrim  for years. They didnt  cover my son  that was only because i had him before i  could add on the  family plan  insurance but i  had masshealth ( medicaid) and they  covered it . Even  though  it was only  300 to have it done at the hopsital  after he  was born. Just call ur carrier and  ask them

Our insurance does not cover circumcision because it is not medically necessary. For our first son we paid $250 for it, nowhere near $600.

With my 2 boys I was on medicaid and they both were circumsized at the doctors office, and I didnt have to pay anything.  Wow, I cant imagine 600.00 for the little procedure...

We unfortunately don't have insurance and had someone come out to our house to have it done. He was super nice...but wanted 500 dollars at first! My husband was like what??? It only took 30 seconds for him to do this process from start to finish. So we talked with him and we got him down to 300 dollars, thankfully. My husband said he did a great job! But I would think that most insurance companies would pay for that.
lol at bryanarae's comment. =)

I know my insurance covers circumcision 100% so that is a relief to me. I know what post you're referring to and I also think $600 is way, way too much.

A lot of insurance companies don't cover circumsition any more. We paid for our son to get circumsized 3 years ago and we paid $110. It used to be covered and just dont right after birth but it is no longer seen as necessary and a lot of hospitals won't even perform a circumsition; at least over where I live. But it wouldn't hurt to call your insurance company and get an actual answer.
And $600???!!!! Wholey Monkeys that's one expensive penis!!! lol

It depends on the insurance, and if you wait to have it done.

My son would have been covered by insurance, if he wasn't preemie and I had it done with in a month of him being born, BUT he was a preemie and I had to wait till he was a month old to have it done.  So I paid $250 to have it done.  That was by his doctor.

State insurances make you pay, I've heard that, my sister had to pay for my nephew and she was on state insurance.  My other nephew was covered by Group Health, non state insurance, and they had to pay $500 for it to be done

So it depends, ask your insurance company, because they have certain guidelines in which they will cover

I'm pretty sure they have to pay if it is done at the hospital, it has been proven that it is better (medically) for the baby. but as some has already said if your OB or Pediatrician dosen't do it, they probly wont.

But who knows with some Ins. companies! I've had it with them! LOL

I would think insurance would cover a circumcision (I believe Jaiden's was completely covered ... no bills yet!) ... but some insurances may differ when it comes to that.  If it's considered 'cosmetic' by an insurance company, it may not be covered.

Or, perhaps, if you're not getting the circumcision done in the hospital, i.e. having a mohel (Jewish man who performs the circumcision) ...you may need to pay out of pocket.  LauraB, did you have your uncle do Jaxson's circumcision?  Would you know if his procedure is covered by insurance or if the parents have to pay out of pocket?

It honestly depends on the insurance coverage you have......Some cover it and others dont.... but WOW  $600 that is unheard of! My sis had insurance that did not cover it and I think she ended up paying $160 out of pocket.....

Most insurance will cover circumcision if you have it done at the hospital. I would definitely call your insurance carrier to double check though.. =)

It never hurts to find out and you can just ask them for a full a breakdown of your responsibilities for labor & delivery. That's what I did!  Good luck! Hopefully it's covered for your little guy! The things we have to worry about! The list is never-ending!

I would assume that that person didn't have insurance. I didn't have to pay for my son to have one but it wouldn't hurt to find out.
