It depends on your body.   When your're exclusively breastfeeding, that acts a birth control in itself.  Breastfeeding usually causes you to not have a period or conceive for up to 6 months.  However, everyone is different.  If you are not trying to conceive, I would suggest some type of birth control method.

Breastfeeding IS NOT BIRTH CONTROL. Do not depend on breastfeeding to keep you from ovulating or conceiving again.
And though the body is extremely receptive to pregnancy immediately after birth due to the hormone levels in the body, that doesn't mean it's safe. Waiting for at least 12-18 months before conceiving again is much safer for a woman's body and for the health of her growing child. Having babies too close together significantly increases the risk of preterm labor and low birth weight (and for you ladies who have had Irish twins and want to insist this isn't true because your babies were fine, I'm talking about RISK being increased which is factually true, not saying it happens to every single person).

To GeekMom1213, I did not say breastfeeding was definite birth control.  Exclusively Breastfeeding does keep periods and ovulation away; that's not from a layman but rather several OBGYN'S.  However, like every different OBGYN has said, still use a birth control method if you want to prevent pregnancy, because nothing is 100%, including breastfeeding.  That's why I suggested using a birth control method to prevent pregnancy if that's what SabrinaMendez is looking for.
