36 week appt & baby weight estimate

I had my 36 week appt yesterday and i did not know i would be getting checked down there! The nurse told me to strip from the waist down and i stood there and told her "no" LOL! My husband was like "why not!?" and i said..."because i havent shaved in over a week!" lol he and the nurse laughed at me and she said it was ok, they've seen it all. After about 15 minutes of trying to reschedule my appt, my midwife came in and reassured me that it was no big deal. She laughed at me and said "i understand it gets harder to shave, but when you go into labor are you gonna stall because you didnt shave your legs?" lol. I love that i switched to a midwife because she makes me feel comfortable.
Anywho why on earth didnt anyone tell me that they have to stick a swab in your butt hole!? LOL! My husband laughed at me cause once it went in i had this awkward look of violation on my face like the whole world just saw me naked or something!

On the upside: I got to feel my babys head! He is already...im not sure what the correct phrase is...upside down? lol. Im measuring at 38 and she said he feels like he is 7lbs maybe a little more and thinks if i make it to 40 weeks he could be between 9-10lbs. Has anyone whos Dr/Midwife been right about weight from just feeling??

Apparently it can't be controlled....but I didn't do it either time (I asked my DH), so there is hope that it won't happen to you! :)

Sometimes the estimates are off, but usually 9 out of 10 they are right around the estimate. My midwife told me my baby would be an 8lb baby and when Milanalyn was born she was 8lbs 4oz. I also asked when I got further along and she would give me her estimates and then when my daughter was born she was right around what my midwife said. I feel that the older midwives are more wiser since theyve been around.

Yeah thats what my sister said! But her midwife told her that her baby felt like a 6-7 pounder and he ended up being 9.3 LOL! So i continually ask her if she is accurate like a nagging woman! I just want a good estimate so i know just what i have to push out LMAO! Ive always measured 2 weeks ahead and every Dr. ive seen has told me my baby will be big, but they never give me a weight estimate just "big" lol.
Hahaha yeah i told my husband im gonna pull a Kourtney Kardashian and shower, shave and put makeup on if my water breaks! Im sure that wont happen tho LOL!

I hate to break it to you, but weight estimates are rarely that accurate, even when done via ultrasound.  I was told I was having a 7lb 7ozer last January when I had a biophysical profile u/s at 40 weeks - he was 6lbs. 11ozs. when he was born the next day.

Also....trust me, when you're in labour, you're not going to care what you look like down there, it'll be the farthest thing from your mind!  And, yes....they have seen it all.  INCLUDING having a bowel movement during labour.  Has anyone told you about that lovely possibility? ;)  LOL, sorry...I just don't want you to be surprised like you were about the Group B Strep swab! ;)

I have an appointment tomorrow for a last ultrasound and to estimate the birth weight I was just scared because I though dad played a factor in it and he was almost 11 lbs at birth!!

You can ask your OB or Midwife if they can tell you how big your baby is at the moment and if they can give you an estimate birth weight.

Ive been to 2 clinics before i tranfsered to a military hopital and both clinics asked me if i wanted a OB or a Midwife. So i guess it depends on what insurance you have like Clysta said. I had Cigna before i got Tricare.

I am now pretty interested on how big my baby is going to be since you said about the sisiter's. My one sister had small babies all in the 6 lbs and my other sister her babies were around upper 7 to over 8lbs. so this has me very curious as I was only 7 lbs at birth.

Might depend on the insurance and what that particular office accepts. I had CareSource when I was pregnant and had a huge book of people I could see. You can call your provider if you wanted and see if they cover the office you had in mind.

Haha i wish i were prepared for the butt swab LMAO!

Yeah i have an older midwife and she feels for the baby and estimates how much he weighs. She said shes usually only a few ounces off and that he is long! I remember every ultrasound ive had, the tech has told me my baby is really long and has big feet lol!

I found this really intersting. I had the strep swab with my son but they never did it in my bottom... interesting.

I have been told the weight comes from the moms side as well. I was a 9lb baby. My son was only 7lbs 4oz but they made me deliver him early so Im sure he would have been much bigger. I haven't ever heard of the midwife telling you weight by measuring though, that is interesting.

This is good info ladies. I've read about having a strep test and my dr said I would have one as we near delivery, but NO ONE ever mentioned the bottom swab thing!!! I would totally be freaked out if I wasn't prepared too! Thanks for bringing this up ladies.

Bacteria that lives in the vagina or rectum and can be passed to the baby during delivery. It's quite common and something like 1 in 4 women have it, even women who never previously did with one pregnancy as well. It's not normally something to even worry about anymore. If you test positive it just means you need to have IV medications during delivery. It can be severe though if baby does actually get it, but it's something like 1 in 200 will if not given medications and 1 in 4000 will if they are given.

Wow thats crazy! She weighed the same as mama did! I figured id have a small baby, but she said hes already in the 7lb range lol. I need to ask more questions so im prepared for the next visit LOL!

Yeah i was surprised to learn that as well cause i kept asking my husband how much he weighed at birth and thats when my midwife told me babys birth weight comes from the mom. Im not exactly sure why they did a rectal swab! lol i just heard swabs to check for chlamydia or infections and then when she was already down there she goes "ok, im gonna stick this in your rectal area!" lol.

The only thing I can imagine it would be for is GBS testing which is done later in pregnancy.

Hmm this is interesting I didn't know that babies weight only came from mama that is very good to know. And I didn't get a list of things either! So what is the whole rectal swab for?

Hm. I know that she came out weighing exactly what I did when I was born (6 pounds 12 ounces) Interesting.....

I'm not sure if all doctors hand out a paper like that or not either, lol. I just know mine did. Saved me from asking a lot of questions about things.

No they never gave me a list of what they'd be doing...slackers lol!
I always ask her if she can give me an estimate of how much she thinks he'll weigh lol. She told me that DH birth weight has no effect on the birth weight of the baby...its all mama. But i was just under 6lbs when i was born. Then she said if i have sisters who had big babies then i would most likely have a big baby. Both of my sisters kids weight range was 8.2lbs-9.3lbs.

Did your doctor give you any list describing what would happen at certain weeks? My doctors office does the GBS testing from 35-37 weeks and it's on a paper they give you at your first appointment. (Which is what I assume they're doing for you since it's both a vaginal and rectal swab)

I'm not too sure about the weight part though. My midwife's never tried to guess it for me (nor did I ever bother to ask) I just went by the ultrasound and guessed on my own based on what I weighed at birth and what DH weighed.
