Breech Baby

Hi girls, Well I am due on April 22nd. This past Friday I went in for my weekly checkup. Heartbeat was great, but when it came to find positioning of the baby, the Dr. didn't really know where he was. They had not done an US to see where he was, well when they did they saw he was completely breech. Totally straight up and down. They told me about the ECV but also how painful it could be since he was so breech. So needless to say, a c-section was not planned and I am a nearvous wreck. I know whatever is best for the baby and me is most important. But do breech babies turn out ok?? I am so worried..  Anyhow hope all of you are doing well.

Thanks & regards,
Kelly

I'm a little confused...are they going to let you have a vaginal delivery even though the baby is breech?  Dont get me wrong they do turn out ok, but the risks are so much greater.  How much do they estimate the baby weighs?  B/c that plays apart in it to.  The main thing would be making sure the body is big enough to really open the cervix to give the head room to come out.  Then there's the risk of the arms not being in a good position and of shoulders getting stuck.  I'm in no way trying to scare you, but I would make sure you find out everything you need to know about the dangers of a breech delivery before letting them proceed with one.  Personally, I would opt for the c-section if the baby doesnt turn.

Hi there parayerful wife.. I am having a c section no vaginal birth due to him being so breech they are not wanting to risk anything. So my fear is a c-section, It is not what I wanted but I know safety first. So I am just making sure breech babies born via c-section turn out ok?? .. New mom here and I am freaking out.

Thanks for your response.

Yes ma'am he'll be just fine.  Most of the time they take sectioned babies to the NICU even if everything goes ok just to make sure their lungs are free of fluid.  So congrats and good luck you have nothing to fear.

I had the same problem with my baby. She was breech and straight up and down. What I had been patting thinking it was her bottom was actually her head! I ended up getting the ECV since I really wanted a vaginal delivery. The doctors told me that a lot of people said it hurt and I was honestly expecting the worse. But it didn't hurt at all! Honestly it was so easy and only took like 10 minutes. They massaged my stomach and watched her with an ultrasound to make sure that she didn't get tangled and then before I knew it they were done and she was turned. I would highly recommend it if your not sure about a c-section.

what exactly is a ECV?

I can't remember what it stands for, but it is where the doctor will manually turn the baby!  I have heard both sides now that says it does and doesn't hurt.  I am 31w and the doctor said that he isn't worried yet, but if he hasn't turned by 37w then they can either try this or schedule a c-section.  Neither of which I want to do!!  I just hope the little guy get positioned in time!!

wild.blue - ECV stands for external cephalic version which like precious03 is manually turning the baby.

precious03 - I wouldn't be too concerned yet at that stage the baby is still big enough to turn around a couple times. Plus only like 3% of babies don't turn by week 38. :)

I was a breech baby. They tried turning me but I just liked being upright instead. My mother said having a c-section made her feel the pressure from them pulling me out and the worst part was healing. Oh also I was premature. But, I turned out fine. Hopefully everything works out!

Hi again, well as it stands now they Dr.'s are not going to try the ECV because he is so breeched so I am scheduled for a c section, I am doing it next week on Thursday the 17th. I am a nearvous wreck but I am just mostly relieved that I will finally get to hold him and see him. I want whatever is safe. I am having another ultrasound this Friday to confirm the c-section. But thanks so much ladies for all your feedback. I am excited/nearvous but I guess its all relative.. right?

Thanks again..

Kelly

My water broke with my daughter at 25 weeks, she was also breeched so i had to have a c-section. C-section doesn't hurt the baby at all. In fact I'd rather that than them turn the baby themselves. As for you, you won't feel any pain during the c-section... just a lot of pressure and pulling/tugging. After the c-section you'll hurt pretty bad lol. But just for a few weeks :)

My son was a breech baby and turned out just fine.  I healed remarkably fast according to the doctor.  I was back to work in less than 6 weeks.  I actually went to Walmart the day after I came home from the hospital.  This time will probably be different though.

Thanks so much girls for the words of encouragement. They are doing another ultrasound this Friday just to make sure he is still breeched. Weird thing is, I feel like he turned a little but could be in my head. I am already set for the c- section and having him be here soon! So thanks again.. its very comforting to know there are others in my positions.

Thanks!
