Which bottles are the best for baby?

I am almost 30 weeks and I am starting to purchase the rest of the stuff that I need before my daughter arrives. Right now I have a starter kit of the Playtex Drop-Ins Nurser system. But, I was looking through a magazine the other day and I was reading about the Avent bottles. I was weighing the pros and cons and came to the conclusion that the Playtex Drop-Ins would be very expensive being that you have to buy the bottle liners weekly. I am looking for a bottle that is vented so that she doesn't get bad gas or anything.

Does anyone have any opinions on the Avent bottles? Should I return the Playtex and purchase Avent? Thanks.

i didn't read all the responses but...  i used the playtex drop ins for all 3 of my girls.  i always bought the store brand of the liners b/c the actual playtex ones are so expensive.  you can get a box of 100 liners and they last a good while.  and none of my girls ever had problems w/ gas or colic.  that would be my recommendation (sp?)!  this time i'm hoping i'm gonna get the breastfeeding thing right (we're doing really good so far!) and that it lasts so i don't have to do the bottle thing again!  :)

While you DO Need to consider the benefits and safety of the various types of bottles there is one other thing to account for....your baby.  Some babies are very picky about the type of bottle and nipple they will use.  I would suggest getting a couple of several different types of bottles and nipples to try.  Don't stock up on just one or two becuase your baby may completely reject that kind.  Once you've figured out the type your baby likes, you can go buy more.

I don't like the drop ins....I always had a heck of a time with them...I always made a huge mess.

The Dr. Browns my kids didnt' like and neither did i...too much hastle.

I never tried Avent.  With my oldest (12 yrs ago) I used either glass bottles or evenflo.

With my youngest two I used either Medela feeding and storage bottles or evenflo.  My oldest used regular nipples...but my youngest two wouldn't use anythign other than standard sized orthodontic nipples.

I don't base anything on the BPA ****....someone is always gonna find something to get everyone paranoid and I havent' seen enough research to show me that it's a big enough deal to worry about.

Don't worry about the bpa thing.  I was paranoid too but did some research.  Nowadays just sneezing will give you cancer.  No seriously, the chances of anything happening are nothing.

No, I wasn't upset about your post. I was just trying to get some information about the topic because I have never heard of it before this post! I agree with you on how Bush got us hell deep into debt and yes, that does make sense about trying to get money. I was looking at BPA free bottles on the internet and they are really expensive! You get 2, 5oz bottles for $16.49! I was like whoa! Thats like almost 60 dollars for 6 bottles! WOW.

The Dr. Browns are really expensive too! But from what I have read, they are worth it. I am going to look more into the Soothie bottles. They are cost efficient and have a ventilation system too. And they are cute! LOL. But I am still kind of worried about the BPA thing... but that's normal.

I use Avent and so far so good.  No problems, but I also use the playtex nursers (drop-ins) and I love them!!!  I use whichever I'm in the mood for and my daughter loves both.

It's hard to sit here and re-read my post and say I wasn't trying for a debate lol. I was just throwing out my opinion on the BPA issue and giving you mommies maybe another way to look at it?

But reguardless I dont judge those who are going to be extra careful with the BPA issue, I dont think it makes you any less of a mother or individual, and same goes to those who aren't concearned about BPA.

Whatever product you choose is 100% up to you, and no matter what it is, your all still going to be incredible mommies.

Im not meaning to upset anyone in any way, so Im sorry if I have.

Im not trying to cause a huge debate or argument and Im in NO WAY trying to offend anyone, so please dont take this post that way.

In my opinion if the plastic bottles contain BPA then wouldnt most plastics contain the same chemical? The plastic IV's used to put in your arm during illness is made of a plexi plastic which runs the chances of having BPA in it? What about plastic sippy cups? They haven't said anything about those either and sippy cups are heated more so than baby bottles. What about the regular plastic cups sold in walmart in bright summer colors? They are plastic and could run the chances of containing BPA.

My point here is that todays society although a tad smarter than the earlier generations(no offense) really have no physical proof that this BPA chemical really exists and really does cause cancer. If you look on most every package in a store the state of california says lightbulbs and even fireplace logs cause cancer.....But where is the proof? And is that why cali is so darned expensive? Because they are busy making alternatives to these products claiming to cause cancer and charging a B u t t load of money for the replacements.

How can experts say that this material causes cancer, and then turn around and say that they have no idea what causes cancer? Some stuff may cause cancer in mice, but that is a total different genetic makeup in my opinion. Not only are they smaller creatures, but some parts of their bodies are unable to flush harmful products from their system, something I learned in pre vet school.

In all honesty, and only my opinion, I think it is a way for the government who is increasingly in debt due to this war, is trying to find something to make them more money and boost the economy, and why not target worrisome and protective and expecting parents?

We spend millions and millions on dollars a year on our children, especially newborns, and if they make some kind of exscuse to get $5.00 and $6.00 dollar bottles replaced with bottles that are now running $12.00 to $15.00 dollars each the government and economy gets more money. They know us parents are super protective in products that we use for our children, so why not target us to get what they want?

I swear by Dr. Brown bottles.  My son had less gas because of these bottles.  I started with the Avent bottles but he just had the worst gas ever.  Once I switched to Dr. Brown bottles he was fine.

Smoothie bottles, are they the ones that has the cup under the bottle for the power formula? that is so cool and easy if you are formula feeding..... there is so much infor. out there on the plastic, that i would just look and see what you can find. But yes, to what I know, avent was the only one that wasnt changing it.......

Whats wrong with their plastic? Is it the BPA that your talking about? I was wondering about that. Can you explain more? It's in the plastic and comes out when the bottle is heated? And it causes cancer?

Another one.... has anyone ever tried the Soothie bottle system? I guess thier nipples are vented to prevent gas and colic. They are the bottles with the green nipples.

Thanks.

I dont think the plastic even needs to be changed in my opinion. If the chemical only leaks out when the bottle is heated then there shouldnt be an issue. The only time my bottles are ever heated is when im cleaning them and never when baby is ready to feed.

After all everything these days causes cancer, my children were fed with the old plastic bottles that contained the chemical, and they never had any issues, I was also bottle fed with plastic bottles and I turned out okay for the most part anyways lol.

Im using Avent bottles with this baby, I used them before with the anti colic nipples and they worked miracles.

I have tried the drop ins and didnt like them very much, I found it hard to mix the powdered formula in and they always had clumps of formula get stuck in the nipples which was a pain in the neck.

Playtex has a bottle called ventair I believe, and they did a really good job, they are angled to help air escape and they have some type of venting system on the bottom. The only issue with those is the venting system constantly became engorged with mold because it is hard to clean.

Dr. Browns is a decent bottle, but once again they are very very hard to clean, I had to soak mine over night in hot soapy water to make sure the formula came out, and that left me with very few bottles as they were constantly soaking.

I really like the Avent bottles, I used them from 3 months to 13 months with my youngest son, and the anti colic nipples are the easiest things to clean. Avents are what I will be using this time around, along with soy formula since soy is easily digested with babies, and you dont run the risk of eating issues incase baby cant digest the milk based formulas, and it also helps prevent colic.

Well Playtex had a vented bottle system without drop-ins. But there's a ton of parts and pieces and it annoyed me to no end!

I used Avent and my children never had colic or gas (okay, there was the occasional gassy episode but it was nothing like you'd experience with a really bad bottle). I like Avent but you have to make sure the nipple is in correctly or the bottle will leak. Easily remedied but can be annoying.

I always highly recommend Avent because it was wonderful and because I don't have a dishwasher, they're really easy to clean. I love the breast-like nipples and my children would really drink on the bottle like they would had they continued breastfeeding (important for the development of strong jaws for when they learn how to chew). You see, with a smaller nipple the babies will s u c k their cheeks in while drinking. But a child who breastfeeds with s u c k in a "chewing motion" which builds strong jaw muscles.
