Placentas are graded 0, 1, 2, or 3 based on their sonographic appearance. However, appearance might not be an indicator of function. Most at term are grade 1 or 2. Smoking greatly increases the risk of developing a grade 3. A truly aged or "pooped out" placenta can be evaluated or detected with umbilical artery Doppler evaluation and often the baby will show signs of growth restriction. As long as the baby is growing and the amniotic fluid index is normal no need to worry about placenta grade. Placenta grading does not offer much clinical value. Grading is also subjective because what I may consider grade 1 someone else may call it grade 2.
Omg that sounds terrible! I'm glad she came out healthy !! My Dr put me on baby asprin as soon as I found out I was preg as a precaution and it's still happening
Y placenta expired with my second. I didn't even know placenta had expiration dates. LoL! So....what happened with me is, two days after my due date I had a dr appt. And I was 2 cm dilated and he said I had to go directly to the hospital because of the expired placenta. It had these big opaque oval blotches all over the placenta. Well, they had to pop the sack. Once they popped it, she wouldn't come so they had to put fluid back in the sack. It was back and forth for 24 hours!!!!! Finally she came out with no problem. The only thing was that she was wrinkly and shedding her skin. Kind of like being in the bath tub too long. But the skin....OMG.....she was paling everywhere. I guess that happens when the baby is in an expired placenta. For two weeks after, she she'd like a beast. When I shook her baby blanket, dead skin whirled around the room like a snow storm. It was so mush. She was just in there too long I guess. Nonetheless, she was healthy, happy, and no complications except the water breaking part, bit I think the dr didn't know what they were doing. LOL, so no worries, it happens and it doesn't mean anything bad. Worse case scenario, the take the baby early.
