alcohol

Hi there

Iam an older mum 43, I'm about 6 weeks pregnant and REALLY REALLY struggling with the no alcohol thing. Of course I want to try and do the right thing but it is so so hard. Before I was pregnant I would probably have 2-3 glasses of wine a night and since then the odd sip.It is actually dragging down my whole mood as well. I have 2 questions really, Does anyone else have any advice on how to get through this and has anyone been in a similar situation and what have they done?, and secondly would the odd 1-2 glasses a week hurt? any good ideas?

Ethanol (alcohol) is a Class D drug which means that positive evidence exists to show that it can damage the fetus in utero.  Class D drugs should be avoided during pregnancy unless the benefit outweighs the risks.

I have to agree that you sound dependent upon it. Sorry, you probably don't want to hear that. But I think you may need to talk to your doctor about it and seek some help in withdrawing yourself from alcohol.

Miraculous~ During the first trimester especially (up til week 14) you need to stay AWAY from alcahol... period. Afterwards some doctors say 1 glass a WEEK is alright but you need to ask your dr. first.

Also, it sounds like you've got a mild dependancy with alcahol. You need to speak to a doctor about getting counselling on how to get past the cravings. Some doctors say that any amt of alcahol can cause FAS or Fetal Alcahol Syndrome.

But some also say a little red wine is ok... I myself drink 1 MAYBE 2 small glasses a week now that I'm in the 2nd trimester. But I've only done it once.

If your married or with a significant other speak to them about your struggle and ask them for help to get past the cravings.
