Raspberries are my favorite fruit! And I'll have to look into the low carb pastas because I loove pasta
I looove carbs, too! Luckily I don't have GD & my diet isn't too high in them anyways, I do have noodles frequently, but I buy whole grain kamut noodles (they have 10 grams of protein per serving, too!!) they are lower in carbs.. that's what I meant by low-carb alternatives. Also, there are some fruits that are lower in sugars - raspberries, blueberries, lemon/lime (don't know very many people who enjoy these raw though! Haha).. watermelon isn't too high in sugar (it's low-medium ranking). Berries are so good for you, too!! Antioxidants galore! I study public health, as I've mentioned before, so I'm crazy for all of this stuff if you ever have questions!
Thanks for that! I'll have to stock up on some healthy choice meals
I also have GD and struggled with what to eat. I met with my dietician and have found that sooooo many of the Healthy Choice meals fall under the amount of carbs I can have. Tonight I had lasagna for dinner. It had 37 carbs (I'm allowed 45 for dinner) so I could have added a small salad. Buying those meals really takes a lot of the guess work out of figuring out my meals.
Fruits are fine but they have to be small and in moderation. Like instead of a 8 inch banana get a knife and cut it in half. Also try walking for 30 min after every meal not snack.
Yeah I've always loved carbs so much but this is the push I needed to just be healthier because now I don't have a choice haha also does anyone know if we have to cut out fruits? Like are natural sugars still bad? Sorry for so many questions I haven't seen my doctor yet since she told me I have GD
There are also noodles with lower carb counts - I'm guessing you're worried about how they break down into sugar :-) Also, tofu, black beans, alternative meats (just watch the sodium contents) - chik*n strips are some of my favorites, avocados, nuts, etc.
Thanks for the input! I've been told to watch carbs and sodium and obviously sugar so pasta is probably not best unless it's small portioned and whole grain but both of you have given me good ideas. Thanks!
Sometimes I'll have some Salmon and chicken but the veggie burgers are really good. Salads, tuna, ,veggies, some fruit in moderation yougurt is good. Just look at the carbs and sodium. 15 grams is one carb also don't go over 500mg in sodium you don't want high BP as well
I don't have GD but my mom has type 2 diabetes so she became a vegetarian for about a year and we ate really well.
It's really not too hard. To be honest it's about what you have at home. That was my problem. I didn't have items at home to my reach and it became hell. I was a vegetarian for about 8 years and I learned lots. Still not a fan of meat. Just some. I was like this but only because I was watching my weight. Still am pretty much. Foods that you can try and are simple and healthy. Rotini salad. It's pasta and you may think it's fatty and such but it's good for you. Mix in tomatoes and spinach or peppers. Either one. Bam. Delicious. You can make a lemon orzo soup. It takes like chicken noodle only more lemony. A salad made at home is great. You can start buying vegeterian foods. Gather recipes. They're delicious. You can simply eat cereal when all else fails. Or sandwich. You can eat cottage cheese alone. That's dairy and you need that. Or grab some milk and drink it with some Special K fiber bars. Or also, I'd grab some Special K cheddar cheese chips. They're like 100 calories. And none of this is sugary at all. I have lots of meals and ideas. I set up my own thing. It's really well balanced. I eat breakfast. Snack. Lunch. Snack. Dinner. Snack.
