pregnant and perscribed painkiler

I've had horrible sciatica from about the middle of my pregnancy. My doctors (both my OB and my primary) had been treating me for this. I had gone to a neurologist to seek cortizone shots which he said he wouldn't do on a pregnant woman. I have gone to physical therapy and chiropractors as well.  They were giving me percocet and I had done medrol packs about 3 times through out since they proved helpful in relieving the inflamation. My doctor assured me that the percocet was safe to take. There are some days i don't need it at all and some where i have to take the directed 1-2 every 6 hours. The nurse midwife i saw recently, expressed some concern that the baby could be born with withdrawal symptoms. I am having my planned c section in 2 weeks. My doctor that is doing teh section just said to stop taking it a week before hand, the nurse midwife said she had seen some babies born with these withdrawal symptoms and it wasn't pretty. I'm very concerned about this. I knwo these last two weeks will be teh worst since i am at my largest and i am only going to take it when absolutly necesary. DO you think the baby will exhibit these symptoms? should i taper down even if i don't need them to make sure the baby isn't affected? I'm a litttle confused why i'm getting two different opinions from the CNM and my doctor. Any suggestions?

I would imagine a lot of it is opinion and the level of the drug taken.  Most people don't become dependent on them in low doses and when monitored.  It usually occurs in higher doses or when the patient doesn't follow the directions of how to take them.  It usually takes more than a few weeks to become dependent as well.  I can't imagine a newborn having serious withdrawal from a few percocet.  It was probably occuring with women who were taking them before they were pregnant or who began early in pregnancy and then kept taking them throughout the pregnancy.  Or they may have been taking more than prescribed and just not told anyone.  You never know.  My sister was prescribed percocet during her pregnancy for a wisdom tooth that was removed.  She gave birth to a healthy boy who is nine years old now.  Trust your doctor and relay your concerns to him.  Other than that, don't worry about it.

i know a lot of doctors say that the benefits out weigh the risks.  I am sure that not a lot of it passes through the placenta.  Look it up online.  Midwife are more granola crunching people and think everything should be natural.

My friend was prescribed tyenol with codeine and klonopin during her lst trimester and her son is okay.  But everyone is different so it is a persoanl decision that you have to make.
