Another thing that can impact the finding of the heartbeat is the placement of the placenta which can migrate throughout pregnancy. An Anterior placenta (meaning it's at the front of the uterus rather than the back) can make it more difficult to hear the heartbeat. At my first several visits this time the doctor said he heard the heartbeat but I did not hear it. This is my 6th pregnancy (aside from 2 m/c's) so I KNOW what the heartbeat sounds like. It turns out I had an anterior placenta that was "masking " and "muting" the heartbeat. Don't freak out until you speak with your doctor.
I agree, sometimes even doctors have trouble finding heartbeats just because of the position of baby. Since you aren't trained I wouldn't worry about it too much, especially if you haven't had any bleeding or major cramping. And if you aren't feeling it move either don't worry. I didn't feel my baby move until 23 1/2 weeks pregnant.
You really need to be seen by your ob before you start freaking yourself out. Using at at home dopplar, it can be very easy to miss the heartbeat especially if you have never had proper training.
I would definately call your ob and talk with him/her, they should get you in to check and make sure everything is ok.
I think it is probably that the baby is in an awkward position. I had that once with my son and then tried an hour later and found it. I would see your OB if you are worried.
I agree and think you should see your OB if you are concerned. I douby you are having a m/c if you have no symptoms. When was your last office visit?
Have you felt any movements. You should be feeling baby move. Drink a freezing cold glass of water that should get baby moving. I agree with Kate sometimes you can't detect it I didn't hear my son's heartbeat till 5 months and my midwife took about 40 minutes trying to find it. I went to the er and they couldnt find it either so I had an emergency scan only to find out he was fine. Just go and see the gp if you are concerned
It is very common not to find the heartbeat your self due to te baby being in a difficult position for it to be detected! If your worried go see your gp! Hope this helped
