Conner does the same thing. If your baby girl passed her hearing tests at the hospital then she is probably fine, especially if you do notice her getting startled at loud noises.

Is your ceiling white....and do you have a ceiling fan? If your ceiling is white and it is a brightly lit room baby is probably attracted to it...they like bright objects because they can see them better. Fans are the same way.

Also She is probably developing better eyesight, since at birth they can't see full figures or objects, and now that she can she is probably interested in what she is seeing.

Conner stares at our bedroom ceiling a lot aswell, mainly because it is a brightly lit area and we have a ceiling fan that is constantly on.

It doesnt take much to amuse a baby at this age. Also the starring seizures tend to have jerking movements of their eyes during a seizure, and their bodies do still get rigid or completely limp during one. My oldest son had them and grew out of them by 8 months old.

If hes staring at one spot for a long period of time without being destracted it could be something called "staring seizures" it's nothing to worry about.
They grow out of it. My brother (who's 20 now) grew out of it by age 2, but he hak them.

They typically do Otoacoustic Emissions (newborn hearing screening) before you leave the hospital or in the first month of life. Do you have the certificate saying that she passed? Just mention it at her 6 week appt and see what the doctor says. Babies/toddlers/teenagers don't always respond to their parents :) My son loved to look at ceiling fans and lights at that age, but do the "home hearing screening" like JoyRenee talked about...just see if she reacts. The best way is to suddenly bang a pan behind her while she's just hanging out...she'll react if she hears it. At the same time, my son slept through the smoke alarms when he was that age and it was SO LOUD...it worried me to death.

Otoacoustic Emissions
One of the tests is called otoacoustic emissions or OAEs. For this test, a miniature earphone and microphone are placed in the ear, sounds are played and a response is measured. If a baby hears normally, an echo is reflected back into the ear canal and is measured by the microphone. When a baby has a hearing loss, no echo can be measured on the OAE test.

Auditory Brainstem Response
The second test is called the auditory brainstem response or ABR. For this test, sounds are played to the baby's ears. Band-aid like electrodes are placed on the baby's head to detect responses. This test measures how the hearing nerve responds to sounds and can identify babies who have a hearing loss.

Both of these tests are completed when the baby is sleeping....

Keep us updated :)

It would be a wonderful idea to see if a REALLY loud noise startles her. This is how they do the hearing tests for newborns. Anyway, lay her on a blanket or mat on the floor. Get a pot and a metal spoon. Stand across the room and hit that pot really hard to make a loud noise.

Notice- does she startle and cry? Do her arms flail out and then does she pull them to her chest? That means her hearing is fine. Of course, go pick her up and console her because being scared like that isn't the nicest thing but at least you'll know her hearing is okay without spending money to go to the doctor to have them do the same thing.

Otherwise, babies love to stare at ceilings and ceiling fans. She's still too young to be consistent with following noises and movements, plus it can overwhelm them very easily. Babies get bored, amazinly enough. So while she may follow slow movement for a minute, then she'll stop and stare off. It's her way of telling you, "I'm done playing."
