down syndrome test

Why do I need this and is there any risk?

I chose not to have it done, my doctor said there's an extremely high false rate (meaning the majority of the first set of tests come back saying there's a high chance the baby will have a complication and them you have to decide if you want to go on for further testing). I have enough to stress out about, why add to it? I don't have anybody in my family with Down syndrome and neither does my fiancé but if either of us did I would probably have considered doing it. Everything in the ultrasounds have come back great so I'm not too worried.

The early down syndrome tests don't give you a positive or negative. They give you a chance either low risk 1/250, mod risk, 1/750 or low risk 1/1500 (my numbers may be off but you get the idea). These tests have a 5% chance of putting you in a higher risk group than you really are. It's up to you whether or not you'd like to have the tests done and if you come back high risk it's up to you whether or not to do more invasive testing. I personally would never refuse the initial test because I'd like to know if my baby was at risk for a problem. As a nurse I'm very aware of all of the complications associated with down syndrome and I'd want to be as prepared as I could for caring for a special needs child.

It's a personal choice. I did it bc  i would rather know that not know. Plus it was another chance to see baby :) Even if it comes back positive,  amniosyntosis is still up to you. They cant force u to have any procedure or terminate pg.

I had it done just because we had a cystc fibrosis scare with my first and had genetic testing done for it on all of us and found out that I'm a carrier of the gene so when they asked about Downs I didn't want any scares when this baby came...you don't have to do the test and the risk of a women our age having a Downs baby is lower then a women in their 30-40 and older....the test is a blood test and ultrasound to measure the skin at the back of the neck there's no risk to the test and unless you have a chance of having a baby with Downs they won't even call you with the results or at least that's how my doc does it

I'm from Britain to and its up to the person they ask you if you wanna continue or not. They went threw with me because I asked this is my 4th pregnancy. They wouldn't say that to me if it wasn't true and I'm not calling you a liar am I um just saying they give you a choice to keep or get rid its up to the women who are high risk

I chose not too!  :) why stress about something that is not life threatening to me or the baby and I will love my child either way. We both agreed on this surprisingly thankfully.

I am not lying.
I am from Britain, and it may be different in America, but here if it comes back high risk the Drs advise you to terminate your pregnancy.

And no they can't tell you straight away and they acherky measured the fluid at the back of babys head not the skin hun xxyou dont have to have it I did it with both my daughters and it was low risk so I didn't need to have other tests done if it does come back high risk then they will book an appointment and they will put a needle in your stomach where toy belly button is and they will take a bit of fluid and test that then you will get a letter within 1-2weeks time. Goodnluck and its up to you if you want it or not and its your choice if you want them to test the fliud xx

You don't have to take it . I did with both my last and this pregnancy . My oldest was fine and don't have it and neither does this baby , but they did find a blockage of the bladder with this baby at the time I got it done . But it went away on it's own . They do it by ultrasound . Unless you want it done by blood work . I also found out with this baby at 12 weeks I was having another boy by blood work they did .

No there's not... I've done it twice for the two different trimesters and I did it through blood work.

If you are high risk you have to get an amniocentesis. They stick a needle in your belly and draw some amniotic fluid. There is a 1% chance of a miscarriage. Which is way too high in my opinion

I just had the test on Thursday. You dont need to. Take the test if you dont want to. But
They do an ulultrasound to measure the skin on the back of the babys neck.. and then the do a blood test and they give you a percentage on how much of a chance your baby could have downsyndrome...

I refused the test because my doctor told me there is a very high false positive rate as well. I will love my child no matter what, and I don't need some test that is going to make doctors advise me to abort my pregnancy. Abortion is not an option for me, Down syndrome or not.

I had it done there are no risks they just do an ultrasound for about 10 minutes and check the measurement of skin behind the baby's neck they can tell you the results right away

It isn't a false positive. It just tells you what your odds are. So for example if it comes out you are high risk for your baby to have DS, that is actually 1 in 100. Of the 100 women who get this result, only 1 woman will actually give birth to a baby with DS.
I actually refused the test aswell. If it comes up you are very high risk then you are advised to abort the baby. And I could never do that. I love my daughter too much.
