When is it okay to take baby out of the house?

Other than the doctor appointments, what age is it okay to take your infant out into the world? My mom says 3 months. I say atleast a month and a half. My bfs family appartently thinks it's okay the day you get out of the hospital. So I just want to know all of you mommies out there opinions.

for me, its straight away, as I have a large family no relatives remotely near by and I still have to do the grocery shop etc, so depending on when they were born (shop is on a wed) off they come with me I try and have 2 nights in the hospital, but here in australia if its not your first baby they try and turf you out after 1 night... alot of cultures dont leave the house for 1-3 months, I think thailand , the tradtion is to have someone come into your house everyday and give you a massage... oh how I wish I lived there!!! lol

I did take my son to my sisters wedding 4 hours away when he was five days old but I knew it was the time he would see my older brother and sister for years (I've only seen them twice in 10 years once for my grandmothers funeral once for my big sisters wedding) and I was correct my boy is almost 31/2 and that's the only time he's ever seen them and my big sister has a girl that's almost 2 I've never got to meet.  So it was important to me

Yeah my baby's born in June and I live in Texas, so by the time she gets here it could be in the high 90s, even 100 degrees plus is not uncommon here from June through August. I get the feeling I'm not going to take her out hardly at all for the first few couple of months at least, simply because of the heat. If she were born in March though, I'd probably wait a month or so.

thats a good point about the wind and elements.... i think sunscreen isnt reccomended until 6 months old so protect baby from sun and yes the wind takes their breath away SO easy! so to protect them from the wind too... again i live on a farm and its always windy!

Anytime you want works... its the easliest time to take baby out is when they are little... i went to my sisters 30th birthday that was 5 hours away 2 weeks after my daughter arrived and that was for the weekend... this round i have my highschool 10 year reunion that is 2 weeks after again :) this time its only 2.5 hours away... and its back home so really? ill be able to stay with my mom... i also live on a farm so in order to get groceries and anything we need that means i take my daughter... its funny that immunity was mentioned as the baby is given antibodies thru the placenta and continues to get a smaller amount thru the breast milk... and this does wear off eventually where they need to make their own, so really they would have less immunity the as they wear off and are older... so techinically they have a better immune system than we give them credit for... and of course i made sure anyone washed their hands before touching her and what not but by no means hid in my house....

You have to make sure that they can't get hurt by the elements or whatever no sunburn or whatever but other than that you're fine. I'll tell you truthfully that I had my son in november so I was very scared he'd get sick and tried not to really take him out much but this baby is due in june and I cannot wait to take her out and about

Any family that wanted to see the girls had to come to our house..n then I had to watch em sanitize their hands b4 touching them!! I had people act like I was extreme, but like you said babies are so fragile..I wasn't taking ANY chances!! Some people forget who's baby it is!! I have all the say so where they are concerned!! All will be the same come July too!! We will be having a boy this time!! =) my family knows the drill by now!! Lol

I agree with you kfrasher. Maybe i'm overprotective, but there's so many germs in the world. Not to mention little babies are so fragile. You never know what could happen. I'm due august 5th and where I live it will be bad tourist traffic.

I just had a baby almost a month ago and we've only been to doctors appointments. When I return to work he'll be 7 weeks old and I would've had my 6 week checkup. I guess its totally up to you but I'm 26 and this is my first child and I'm very old fashion. I didn't want to expose him too soon and I didn't become completely healed

I took my first son out within the week we got home.  No reason not to. People will say "their immunity!" But as long as no one.that is sick is coughing/sneezing/handling them there really isn't a problem.  Come on, what did people do before this whole "sanitize everything!!!" Craze did?

I can tell you that a girl i work with just had the baby 1 week ago and she had him in the office already.  I know for me I have a thing that I'm supposed to host 2 1/2 weeks after my due date that I'm hoping to go to and bring baby with me.
