Spinal/being awake during c-section

Lately I've been thinking more and more about my upcoming delivery (starting to panic, I'm not going to lie haha!!) I have my U/S the 19th and we'll set a c-section date that day. I need some experiences from women that have had spinals and been awake during their c-section. I had a c-section before but was put completely under (I never had an epidural, either) and I wasn't awake. What does it feel like when they're cutting you, how does it work? I'm just scared I'll freak out knowing what's going on behind the big blue screen, haha!

That's too funny! I just remember being rushed to the OR and hearing the doctors and nurses yelling, and them putting a mask on my face and me saying "I'm going to puke" and I woke up about 2 hours later thinking WHAT just happened? That didn't really just happen, and freaking out because my mouth was so dry I couldn't swallow! I will just have to make myself do an out of body experience and pretend nothing is happening behind the big blue curtain, my husband will have to keep me occupied!

Good idea - maybe you'll be more calm just knowing what could be done if you had a freak-out.  You seem a lot more stable than I was at that age, and part of my freak out was just the emergency nature of the situation.  I'm betting you'll do just fine.

It was kind of a weird sensation, though.  The med made me sort of aware that I was having a baby, but I also kind of thought I might be at the symphony at the same time.  It was pleasant enough, but once I was fully awake & aware, I was asking if they were playing symphony music during the surgery.  They weren't of course. :)

Yeah what I was happy about was that no one but her daddy held her before me. And that was just him taking her to the nursery then no one got her until recovery was over.

I bet!! It was so late when I woke up, around 12am, and I had been in labor for almost 24 hours before that, so they gave him to me, we did skin to skin for a while and I breastfed, then they took him for a couple of hours while I slept, looking forward to it being in the morning this time so I can be wide awake and snuggle all day!! :)

After mine was over they gave me something to make me sleep during recovery. I didn't really like that cause when I woke up it was just me and a male nurse checking my bleeding. When I was younger I was malested and I was sooo uncomfortable with me not having my husband there and that is another reason I don't want a csection again.

I've never heard of that, I'll have to ask my doctor, I think I meet with the anesthesiologist next time so I'll talk to him about my options if I freak out, haha! Thank you!

Just so you'll have this back-up in mind...
when I had my c-section, it wasn't planned - emergency.  I did kind of freak out, and they gave me something.  It made me not really realize what was happening during the surgery, but in any case, it didn't put me to sleep and they were able to "snap me out of it" pretty quickly after delivery.

No idea what it was, but I suspect that if you DO show signs of freaking out, they'll do the same.  But since it's all planned, hopefully everything will go just wonderfully for you!

Wow they didn't give my hubby options....knowing him he would have been like heck yeah and get all excited cause he wanted to take the pics but they wouldn't even let him do that. It's amazing how differant rules are at differant places.

i wanted to watch and my doctors wouldnt let me.  they said your mind would play tricks on you then maybe and make you think you feel it!  But My finace can watch if he wants but they do put the sheet up...all he has to do is stand up and watch them.  I wish he could video it tho bc I would like to see atleast one of my kids being born...its definately a different feeling knowing they are tugging on yuo but it doesnt hurt...as far as the spinal - my anesthesiologist gives me a lil extra pain meds so it doesnt wear off too fast :)  Its nice working at a hospital and knowing people!!

Actually they've already asked my husband if he wanted to watch, he said no, haha. My mom watched my sisters, I don't know how they do it, it grosses me out!

i had a csection with my first child and I watched the whole thing. they asked me before I went in if they should set up the over head mirror and I said yes, and watched them pull my little princess out butt first and stop while she peed all over my belly, then finish pulling her out. I cant even look at someone's knee if it is scraped up, but I didn't mind it at all cause I was so concerned with watching my princess come out. I will definitely be asking to watch again this time around, but this time my bf will be there instead of my mom so im very scared that he wont be as comforting lol. like the other girls have said all you feel is tugging, doesn't even feel like you are cut open

I had 2 spinals & 2 c-sections, and was awake for both. My experience during the surgery was that i could feel an inner sense of tugging, pulling, pressure, but literally no pain either time. My 2nd delivery i was starting to freak out a little so i got a light sedative but was completely coherant, just slightly mellowed, but it wasn't a match for all of the adreniline i felt!!!  It goes quick and honestly i think you will be fine. Just imagine yourself holding your baby and then you'll be in the moment before you know it!!!

Ohh no I fully plan on making sure my husband has eyes locked on me, because if he looks over and sees me cut open I know he's going to freak out, too, and I'll freak out if he does, hahah!

I don't have the option of an epidural, just a spinal. I'm so nervous about it! Hopefully it's quick and easy, it's not so much the pain I'm worried about, just the fact of a needle going into my spine is terrifying!

Its not the cutting that u feel! It is all the pressure from them pushing and pulling. I didn't have a problem with the epidural! It was really a blessing! Its not bad at all. I also had a tubal in sept of last year and when I woke up I hurt so bad. With the epidural it wasn't like that. I am goong to have another one with this baby also.

I'll be staring at my husband or staring at the blue screen infront of me, I don't want to see ANYTHING going on.. I can't even watch a c-section on TV hahah. I have such a bad stomach for that stuff!

We were just talking about this yesterday at work one of my friends said she didn't feel anything other than tugging and pulling she said it was the weirdest feeling to not be able to feel anything but to see your body moving. She also said that if they have the lights above the bed with the reflector in them whatever you do do not look up in them!!! She watched all kinds of c sections and didn't even cwinch so she kept watching in the reflector cause she wanted to see her baby come out and when she seen what they were doing was when she had her freak out moment.

The spinal didnt really hurt me...it definately feels weird tho!  But I was numb so fast from it tho!!  You will be fine - just tell your doctor to poke you with the scalpel to make sure you are numb :)

U don't feel anything when there cutting th only reason I knew the baby was out was the cry. Then she said ok you are going to feel pressure and she pushed real hard under my ribs sewed me up and went to recovery for an hour. Not scary at all and nothing to be nervous about

Thank you!! I'm excited to see her right away and hear her cry, I really missed out that first 2 hours he was here, everyone saw him before me, but I wouldn't let them hold him. I can't wait to snuggle her, hopefully it goes smooth and over super quick! :)

o and i felt very little tugging and pressure, and they should definitely check you before they start, my doctor does, however i was at a different hospital last month for cerclage and i was more numb after procedure than when they started and felt a lot of tugging and all with that procedure but still no sharp pains or anything.
