hello,
your period is actually 14 days after ovulation. so say you have a 30 day cycle. you can figure out when you expect your next period and then count back 14 days to mid cycle, so day 16 of your cycle would be closer to your day. this is because ovulation (the release of the egg) is what prompts your period. most women have a 28 day cycle and ovulate on day 14 and that is why most people say day 14 cause its right in the middle there for them. but! seems to me that after 4 years you probably don't have a regular cycle. so i would suggest using a basal temperature chart to find out. i used fertility friend.com and the tracker on here, plus a home made chart of my own. i found fertility friend found my ovulation day better (both use different methods of deducing your ovulation) but medhelp kept track of other factors. anyway, they give tutorials on how to use them. but basically you will take your temperature (orally) in the morning (before talking, before rolling over if you can) and then you plug the number into the program. your temperature during the first half of your cycle (period to ovulation) will be low. then you will ovulate and the next morning it should spike up by .4 to a full degree, if not more sometimes. then your temp will stay higher until you get your period. if you are pregnant your temperature will stay high. so that will save you money on tests. after gathering three charts i went to my doctor and he thought i might not be ovulating every month. so this sort of chart is helpful in discovering troublesome areas. i also found out that i didn't have a long enough second half of my cycle. so doing a chart is very helpful. if you to really want to rev up the power of the chart do opks alongside the chart. it will help you pin point the hours of peak ovulation. you can also look at cervical mucous (cm) you will notice around the middle of your cycle that your cm will change. you can search online for ways to test this (you can also look up feeling your cervix if you are interested) but generally i just take note when i wipe. you are looking for a clear, stretchy mucous that those trying to conceive (ttc) call egg white cervical mucous (ewcm), cause it looks like egg white. this will give you a hint that you may be ovulating soon.
hope that is helpful

-opk
-basal temp chart
-cervical mucous
-cervix position
-ferning test (i didn't talk about it cause i don't have experience with it and haven't heard of many women doing this)
