babies can get reflux and indegestion just like we do. Take ur lil baby to the pediatrician. And tell hiim what u told us. And the can better determine whats wrong. ur vabe may also be lactos intolerant. My daughter was. I had to put her on soy formula.
I took him in, Dr said it looks like a little bit of reflux but he's gaining weight(he weighs 10lbs and 5oz!) So they're not going to do anything. I've been giving him gripe water and it is working wonders!!
Thanks ladies, I'm going to take him in tomorrow and ask about everything it could be. I had no idea there could be so many problems!
You may also look into his tummy muscle my nephew had a thing with a muscle In his tummy & he couldn't keep anything down had to have Sergey for it.
Honey my son was exactly that. I fed him four oz and he would throw up four oz.
At first they told me reflux. So we tried mixing rice with my milk.. Did not work.. My doctor knew FOR SURE it was that... Even when I asked could it be something else... He said absolutely not.
He was barely gaining anything so I switched to a formula for reflux... Nope.. After switch and switching and switching nothing!!! We were very concerned..
I took him to another doctor because I was not satisfied at all! Guess what! My son was lactose intolerant. After switching him to a lactose free formula he didn't throw up AT ALL after weeks of being cover constantly and him not smelling like and lotioned up baby it was amazing!
My son is now 15 months old and still lactose intolerant (my doctor said he could grow out of it) all milk products give him bad diapers so bad they are liquid. All cakes etc can't have diary in them. Etc. but he is healthy and perfect, but now off formula he is on almond milk.. Which is fine but he does have to drink a drink once a day to give him all his vitamins he is missing out on because he is lactose intolerant.
My first son had terrible reflux. I was worried he wasn't getting enough milk from me but at 3 weeks he was 14 lbs!!!! Lol his reflux went away on its own by 6 months but I also completely adjusted my diet. No dairy, spicy foods, no onion, no garlic, no beans brocolli cabbage. I slowly began adding things back in. For us it was the dairy that caused the issues. Also around 6 weeks you will sometimes notice babies bowel movements will change and may become less frequent. Its because their digestive system is maturing. As long as you are still getting plenty of wet diapers, they are gaining weight, its ok if they only go once a day. Good luck
I will try it just kills me because he always panics because he chokes everytime:( My friend has a baby who has Glactosemia(sp?) and she cant digest her moms BM and i was just reading the symptoms and it seems like that is something to look into as well, thank you!
The main problem is, if he has a milk allergy I don't believe formula will make it better. He would have to be put on a certain type. Try not stress much, as they can feel your tension. If you already know it will happen you can be prepared for it and handle it easily. The more relaxed about it you are, the easier it makes them feel and the less traumatic it seems.
He is definitely NOT a preemie lol, i want to keep BF but it makes it so hard because every time i feed him i dread having to burp him so instead of the nice bonding time its a panic attack waiting to happen
If these still don't make things better, he needs to be checked for reflux. It is more typical in preemies, but any baby can get it.
Yes. You'll notice changes faster and will be able to reduce or take away things as you notice them in the baby. Formula is substantial, but I personally will never recommend it unless its absolutely needed or the mother doesn't/can't BF. The iron in it can cause worse constipation, and it's harder on babies belly and takes much longer to digest than BM does.
Ok, i do eat alot of dairy now that i think about it...should i keep nursing while i change my diet?
EBF babies don't often get constipated. I would look into what your own diet is, more than likely it's the culprit. I would start by cutting out dairy - no milk, cheese, etc etc and see if that works. If after a week or two you see no improvement you can try other foods.
Thank you guys SO much!
I can litterally collect atleast an oz of spit up by just dumping it off the burp cloth and he was doing really good on diapers but now he seems really constipated, he wets diapers regularly but when i change him two out of three diapers have a tiny smear of poop after he pushes for like a half hour and i expect it to be full then every third or so diaper its full this just started happening about three weeks ago
Do you try burping? I know they say you dont need to as much with breast feeding but I have known a lot of people with that problem. I had to pump and formula feed and I burped my son after every 3 to 4 oz. Good luck!
There are a few things to try before resorting to formula, if you want to continue nursing:
1 - Your diet, as the other poster mentioned. If your baby is sensitive to milk, he won't get it if you don't eat it. You can try stripping your diet of typical irritants, then adding one in week by week until you figure out what it is.
2 - Keeping him upright for 1/2 an hour after feeding and burping regularly during feeding. That helps with getting the air to escape.
3 - More frequent meals so he consumes less in one feed. It's taxing since he will feed more often but it helped with our daughter.
4 - Medicine. Our daughter had suspected reflux and we used a prescription until she was about 6 months old (forget the name). Apparently, it's common for the muscle at the top of the stomach to be underdeveloped at birth so we used the medicine to keep as much down as much as possible until she was keeping it down herself. I'm still not totally convinced she had reflux but we feel the medicine helped (when we forgot, there was a lot more spit up).
One thing to keep in mind is it looks like a lot when they spit up. Our doctor suggested this test - he had us spill measured amounts of water on the table and see how big the puddles were and how much they wet the burp cloths. We started with a teaspoon and determined she never spit up more than 1-2 tablespoons after a feeding even though we were convinced she threw up every single drop of fluid she took in. Also, diaper counts are very helpful - if he's soiling enough diapers and gaining weight, he's keeping enough down. I know it's frustrating and difficult. Good luck!
I would also consider giving your baby gas drops. I used those all the time with my daughter when she was a baby and you can use them as early as one month old.
ok! thank you so much...it makes me so sad when hes sad :(
It could be that he's allergic to something in your milk. I formula fed my daughter because I wasn't producing any milk however she was very colicky and she spit up quite a bit. She was very fussy and whiny as well. Talk with your doctor. I had to put my daughter on a hypoallergenic formula for colic and fussiness.
