What exactly is a epidural for?... does it eliminate the pain during birth?

I got the epidural. I woke up at 3:30 in the morning with cintraction pains but they didnt hurt that bad but by 3:30 in the afternoon I was in tears from them I got to the hospital and was dilated to a 6 and got the epidural around 4:15 and had my daughter almost 4 hours later and was still numb. It had just started to wear off as they where coming in for me to start pushing.

I was 8cm dialated when I got my epidural.  It was amazing.  I was able to walk 30 minutes after i had my daughter.

I got lucky. My epidural worked amazing! I was in labor for about 9 hours before I got it. I had to have it. My contractions were so painful.

It eliminates the pain for when the baby is actually coming out.. Well it's supposed to my mom said she started laughing because she couldn't tell if she was pushing or not lol

It helps with pain ..but ur gonna have to deal with pain for awhile because they dont give it to u right away I was in full labor for 12hrs b4 I got the epidural well half of that 12hrs I was at home in labor ...I refused to go for a long time wanted to make sure it was really labor

I hope it takes away the pain completely. .I'm afraid of how bad it could hurt..

Yes sometimes it fails and sometimes it doesn't completely numb but yes it takes away the pain.
