Gestational age based upon your last menstrual period (LMP) is based on the assumption that a woman’s cycle is 28 days and she ovulates on Day 14. The thing is, most women don’t follow this pattern and sometimes it is WAY off. If you ovulated later than Day 14, your baby is not as old as your LMP suggests.
By waiting a week or two to do another ultrasound, your doctor can compare the two and see if your baby is growing. You may want to ask him/her about doing blood tests to measure your hCG levels. Usually, two samples are drawn, 2-4 days apart and the results compared. With a viable pregnancy, your hCG levels should double about every 48 hours.
Sometimes at 7 weeks you might not be able to see it. Did they mention miscarriage to you? Did they check your HCG levels to see if they are doubling? Otherwise at 9 weeks they will be able to see something for sure.
