bumper debate

So the big debate---to use bumper pads in the crib or not.
They say as far as sids you shouldn't, but then i heard about babies getting arms/legs stuck or bruises from the side of the cribs.
What is everyone feeling on this?

I think breathable bumpers are a great idea.  We never used them (had regular bumpers) but I will probably buy them for baby #2.  There are SOOO many choices when it comes to babies now a days!  It's always great to see what other people are doing.  :)

I haven't given it much thought yet, i just wanted to see what other people were saying. I have a motto "do what's right for you, not what other people think is right for you"

ok-the bumper debate- i was told the same thing and i decided to use it for my first child who is now 4 and never got her arms, legs, head or anything else for that matter stuck.
my biggest concern was for my 2nd daughter who has brittle bone disease and she could actually break something just by stretching too far. my dilemma? do i use it and take the chance so shes not bumping into the crib rails or do i not use it and hope she doesnt roll into the crib rails and break something? i chose to use it and so far so good. she is now 2 and still in her crib with the bumpers and no probs.(keep in mind she is only 16lbs and 23" long-still infant size)this is why she is still in crib with bumpers....so if your looking for someone to tell you it's okay and your child wont get hurt-no one can tell you that without getting themselves in trouble when your child does get hurt.....you have to take the examples to heart and follow what your heart and your mother intuition tells you. there is no greater answer than that.

My sons crib has them in it but he has never slept in it yet... Julian is uing a sleep positioner because when he was about a few days old he would not sleep and he wanted to be cuddled so I purchased one. I think I will continue using it and once he goes into his crib and I will leave the bumpers. I know they say they are not safe but I agree with BTS SIDS can always happen.....

You can buy breathable bumpers at OneStepAhead . com (no spaces). They are considered safe and do not have strings.

Crib bumpers increase the risk of SIDS. So get a breathable one! They cost about the same.

we used a bumper untill she was about 10months. she was/is a wiggle worm.with chubby legs.and they got stuck all the time.  so they were a must then i took them out one day to wash it and never put it back in. i didnt giver he a pillow untill she was a year old. and it is a queen size not to fluffy. queen size so it would go from one side of the crib to the other. and she does just fine. but every baby is different.

I have always used bumpers for my cribs. Make sure they fit really well and are tied well too, that way they cant come off and get wrapped around the babies neck. I also used recieving blankets instead of thick blankets for my babies and they are fine.

But remember, no matter how many precautions you take in preventing SIDS, it can always still happen.

I understand completely how a bumper can kill a baby!  My son wedges himself in the corners of the crib all of the time.  If I had regular bumpers I think he would have smothered a long time ago.  Anyway, there are breathable bumpers taht you can get at babies r us.  They can get right up to them and still be able to breathe.  You are correct, they do end up being a necessity.  DS started waking up up to 10 times per night due to limbs sticking completely through the bars.  He always ended up with both legs out up to his crotch which made him unable to move.  I got the breathable bumpers and they hold him in great and I dont have to worry.  I would check them out.

I don't understand how a bumper can kill a baby. They'd really have to try hard to smoosh their face up against the bumper to manage that. And the strings as any hazard are usually out of the way, mine are anyway.. I think he would roll or move around to where he'd bump his head on the bars or get his arm somehow all twisted up in the spaces, I could see him doing that, as wiggly as he is. So I'm for bumpers.
