It's been proven that sleeping on your back puts pressure on one of your major veins, which lessens blood flow to your legs and to the baby. Granted it's worse for some women than others. The best way to tell if its okay for you to sleep on your back personally is if while you're sleeping or laying on your back and you feel uncomfortable (i.e. shortness of breath, head ache, legs cramps, etc.) then you shouldn't lay that way. But most doctors will tell you, you can lay however you want until it becomes uncomfortable. It's just a general thing that they recommend you not sleep flat on your back.

Either side is fine to lay on. They recommend your left side because it helps with circulation. But your right side is fine too.

Its recommended that you sleep on your left side. Sleeping on your back can cause complications further into pregnancy such as you baby laying on a nerve that will cut off the oxygen/blood flow.
